Congrats to former PhD student Dr. Alfred Limbere on his new publication in Education Sciences with Drs. DiNapoli & Greenstein examining preservice teachers’ noticing of students’ reasoning about rate of change. Alfred is now teaching at Drake University. Link in comments!
The Department of Mathematics recently celebrated several successful master’s thesis defenses by Kaitlyn Cohan, Edward Czudak, Vlad Nita, and Kevin Vargas. Congratulations to all of our graduates and their committees on this outstanding achievement. We are proud of you all! 🎉
The Mathematics Department had nine students presenting research at this year's Student Research Symposium. Check out these great pictures from the event. We are so proud of all of our student researchers!
Montclair Math hosted Admitted Students Days on April 12 & 19! Future math majors visited campus, connected with faculty/students, and got a feel for life at MSU. Huge thanks to our ambassadors Coda Mearizo, Lauren Khalil, Annabella Ganun, & Preston Pietruszewski. Great days!
Doctoral students John O’Meara, Tim Aberle, and Shanna Anderson, with Drs. Mika Munakata and Monica Taylor, presented two papers on teacher leadership at AERA in Los Angeles. Great work representing Montclair!
In Dr. Steven Greenstein’s Choreomathematics course, doctoral students explore polar graphing through movement, tools, and inquiry. A highlight: learning with NYC subway dancer @shakeyyjones, including an embodied take on r = sin(2θ).
Montclair Math Club hosted its first Integration Bee on 3/18, inspired by MIT. Students competed through 4 rigorous rounds for prizes, including laptops for the top 3.
Congrats to our winners:
🥇 Luis Araujo
🥈 Vlad Nita
🥉 Nyaisha Green
We hope this becomes a new tradition!
Student Spotlight: Hailee Lowry (el-ed) shared, “I honestly used to be so bad at math so it made me hate it.” But over time in her MTHM302 class, she began to feel a new sense of confidence, "It was the best I have felt about math in a long time!” Keep up that excitement Hailee!
Doctoral student Amanda Provost and her advisor Dr. Nicole Panorkou have published a new article in Research in Integrated STEM Education foregrounding the role of mathematics in interdisciplinary STEM. We are so proud of you Amanda!
Five doctoral students and two faculty presented at the 28th RUME Conference in Alexandria, VA. Proud of Amy Daniel, Ariel Bonneau Rodriguez, Asja Alić, Emily Olson, and John O’Meara for sharing work on precalculus reform, embodied polar coordinates, and math anxiety!
Four doc students + three faculty presented at the 2026 AMTE Conference in Portland. So proud of our doc students Amanda Provost, Amy Daniel, Asja Alić, and Helene Leonard for sharing work on responsive PD, math anxiety, and critical statistical literacy. Keep up the great work!
Doctoral student Michael Frimpong, with Drs. Nina Bailey and Steven Greenstein, presented at Fab Educators Summit 2026. Michael designed a 3D statistical manipulative for elementary students to support creative, embodied sense making of data.
Student Spotlight: Brianna Stratton (EL Ed). Brianna shared how drawing and cutting fraction strips in Dr. DiNapoli’s course helped her better visualize and make sense of fractions.
“I have always struggled with fractions...but [drawing] helped me think throughout this process."
