the most impressive demo I got at Token2049 was courtesy of the @opera team. Not because of tech per se, but because of the design philosophy and the clear evidence of building a product that's perfectly suited for the end user in a way that existing crypto products simply aren’t.

it's their minipay wallet in the mobile Opera Mini browser. it's a noncustodial stablecoin-only wallet for emerging markets.

it has the following features:

- built on Opera Mini (standalone pay app coming soon). Opera has 100m users in Africa alone. Opera Mini is a data efficient mobile browser popular in mobile first markets like SE Asia and Africa
- first and last mile FX integrations with local providers like airtime, mpesa, and exchanges like yellowcard
- key backup with google
- uses Celo's socialconnect to map addresses to phone #s
- Built on Celo, ETH L2 (formerly L1). Supports USDT and USDC although interface just says USD and obscures specific stables
- Fee abstraction. (low) fees can be paid in stables. no juggling ETH or L2 tokens and bridging it to random L2s to pay for gas
- so far launched in Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Kenya
- 0-fee swaps between stables

Overall, it has all the right features. Great distribution on day 1. Social recovery and phone # based credentials. Unsurprisingly, it was an immediate hit. You can see Celo active addrs take off after launch in Sep 2023
