There are children alive right now who have never known a day without a drone overhead.

In Gaza, southern Lebanon, Yemen, and Somalia, the sound of the drone, the distant mechanical hum of an MQ-9 Reaper or a Hermes 900 circling at altitude, has become the ambient sound of childhood.

It is the sound that means:

Any of us could die today, based on surveillance, metadata, and a pattern-of-life analysis conducted in a distant control room by someone who has never set foot in our country and cannot pronounce the name of our neighborhood.

There are children who flinch at clear skies because clear skies mean better visibility for the drone.

They learned this the way children everywhere learn about danger: from experience.

From watching what happened to the people around them when the weather was good and the sky was blue.

Those children have names.

We do not know them.

We know the names of the musicians who performed at the halftime show.

We have thoughts and feelings about the halftime show.

We have a finely calibrated system of aesthetic opinions about entertainments, delivered instantaneously, while the children who flinch at clear skies continue to flinch, and the drones continue to circle, and the people in the control rooms finish their shifts and drive home, and the news does not cover it because it is not news.

It is policy.

Policy is not news.

Policy is the water.

They will sanction your country for human rights abuses while selling weapons to the government committing them next door.

They will fund "democracy promotion" NGOs in your capital while supporting the coup that removes your elected government when it nationalizes its own oil.

They will express outrage at your election irregularities while their own electoral system contains mechanisms like gerrymandering, voter suppression, and an Electoral College where losing the popular vote can still win you the presidency, all of which would be condemned as anti-democratic in any country they were monitoring.

They will lecture you about the rule of law while refusing the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, the International Court of Justice, and any other body with the theoretical power to hold them accountable.

The "rules-based international order."

They write the rules.

They enforce the rules.

They are exempt from the rules.

And they would like you to know that this arrangement is the foundation of global stability, and that any country that questions it is a threat to peace.

The thing about psyops is that they rarely put out overtly anti-African messages. What they do is put out messages that sound pro-African, but the effect is to traumatize you or distract you. People have to look out for the use of fallacies, the distortions of history, and the rabbit hole conversations where someone appears to be challenging you on a factual detail, when what they're really doing in is distorting or distracting from the narrative.

If you find yourself feeling insulted or frustrated engaging in a conversation, because you seem to either being going round in circles or the subject keeps shifting, you've probably encountered a psyop.

But in my opinion, the worst psyop that has been done to Africans, at least in Kenya, is to convince them that what they think doesn't matter. What's in our minds is just "theory" with no practical use. And I keep asking : if your mind is so useless to imperialism, why is the US army, no less, investing in what you think?

After decades of telling developing nations to privatise and let the invisible hand of the market do its thing, the West is coming out and saying government intervention is the way to go.

Here, American political scientist, Elizabeth Economy says the United States, a country that has historically portrayed itself by free-market capitalism, can’t compete without direct state intervention in the economy.

She says that if the US wants to compete with China it’s “going to have to adopt some elements of their playbook”.
This is is important because she’s effectively saying the Chinese model with its strict control of the commanding heights of the economy is simply the better model.

This moment would have been a great opportunity for the US to showcase to the world once and for all that letting the market dominate the economy is superior to having the state dictate the economy.

Instead, we have the supposedly most pro-market country in the world coming out to say the markets simply cannot do it when forced to compete against state intervention.

This goes even harder when you realise that Economy is responding to a question asking her if the market is not a better option. He response is that China has created a “playbook” of state intervention, and the United States doesn’t have anything to compete with. And you thought they had capitalism.

All of this just reinforces what serious people have been saying for years, that taking firm control over energy, finance, heavy transit and raw materials to dictate national strategy, rather than trying to play a passive, balancing referee is precisely what separates perpetually “developing” nations from those that go on to realise their full potential.

Of course, you have people who insist on some voodoo called a “mixed economy”, and claim that’s what China is doing.

What they don’t say (or realise) is that this middle-of the-road half-assed “mixed” bs approach is what the most stagnant, perpetually “up and coming” countries have been doing for a while now. Think Brazil, India, South Africa and others.

Beyond just its vagueness, the “mixed economy” stuff doesn’t work because whenever a developing state attempts to “balance” public interests with private market forces without establishing absolute strategic control, the private sector ends up controlling the state. Again, see the B, the I and the S in BRICS.

This is because private monopolies, a.k.a. oligarchs in energy, telecom, or banking use their profits to buy political influence, dismantle regulations and extract state subsidies without any pressure to deliver public infrastructure.

The result is that instead of getting a “dynamic market with government oversight” as promised, the nation gets crony capitalism where risks are socialised onto the public while profits are privatised. See Nigeria and Mexico.

The historical reality is that from the West to the Far East, every nation that successfully transformed from poor agrarian societies into industrial powerhouses did so by exercising absolute control over its strategic economic nodes, and not by handing them over to the “efficiency” of the private sector.

In the end, controlling the foundations of the economy with an iron fist, while forcing everything built on top of those foundations to compete ruthlessly, as China is doing, is the most proven industrial formula in modern history, and the Americans are openly admitting it now that doing so suits them.

We live on a planet where the country that overthrew Iran's democracy in 1953 is "concerned about Iranian authoritarianism."

Where the country that funded Saddam Hussein's chemical weapons program in the 1980s launched a war in 2003 to remove Saddam Hussein for having chemical weapons.

Where the country that armed, trained, and created the conditions for the Taliban spent twenty years fighting the Taliban.

I am not asking you to hate America.

So apparently, that Suella Braverman line about Africa being grateful for colonial development was the Labour Party ideology of the 1940s for justifying colonialism. From the 1940s, the Labour Party justified colonialism as a moral problem rather than an political economy one. They also changed from the Conservatives policy of colonial extraction to colonial "welfare." So Braverman, a former Conservative, now Reform UK politician was repeating liberal, Labour talking points about colonialism from the 1940s.

These British politicians are confused and hopelessly outdated.

I fear that the Traore's comments about the study of religion are going to be twisted to continue the imperialist war on the humanities in British colonies. Traore did not say religion should not be studied at all. He said that it should be taught by Burkinabes in Burkina Faso, and if the Burkinabes can't teach it, it should be left alone.

Speaking from the Kenyan experience, what Kenyans are thinking when it comes to humanities education is not what Traore is talking about. First, humanities programs in Kenya are tiny, compared to sciences. Second, we do not teach updated, current and relevant knowledge to Kenya's development. We teach "the syllabus." Why? Because the ministry of education is stuck in the colonial past and uses instructions from IMF and OECD to make education policy decisions. We cannot change the syllabi without going through a long, expensive and humiliating process that often keeps asking whether we've benchmarked with the West and whether the material is "relevant to the market," meaning to Western employers and NGOs.

But most of all, Traore is committed to science skills being used in Burkina Faso. Kenya is committed to crushing or exporting them. The Kenya government will pontificate about STEM, but our roads are built by Chinese engineers while Kenyan engineers build bridges in Japan.

If you're from a country colonized by the British, especially a former settler colony, what Traore is saying cannot be copy-pasted to your country before you understand the anti-intellectualism that the Anglo-Americans maintain in your country. The British did not wage war on humanities or sciences. They waged war on ALL knowledge. I mean ALL. They comsidered science teaching the knowledge for workers and didn't teach arts at all. They taught abstractions and imperialism.

We're not in the same Whatsapp group with Traore. Traore cut ties with France. Kenya invited France to build a military base here and call itself pan-Africanist. What Traore saying is different from what we think he's saying.
