“The DeSantis administration spent nearly two-thirds of Florida’s emergency fund last fiscal year on fighting illegal immigration, dwarfing spending for severe weather,international rescues, and other emergency missions for which the fund was created.

State records show that the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM), the agency in charge of the so-called “Alligator Alcatraz” and “Deportation Depot” lockups, ✅✅✅shelled out $890 million in taxpayer dollars between July 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026.
Of that, $564 million — about 63% — went to immigration enforcement, meaning emergency managers spent more on immigration than all emergency missions combined last year.

The rest paid for assistance to counties and other states, costs associated with rescuing Americans from Israel after the Oct. 7, 2023, attack, and severe weather — including snow in the Panhandle, storms in Northwest Florida, and heavy October rainfall.

🚩🚩The spending represents a significant shift in the purpose of the Emergency Preparedness and Response Fund, a trust created in 2022 to allow Gov. Ron DeSantis to quickly pay for disasters like hurricanes, floods, 🚩🚩and more without legislative approval.

But in 2023, the trust became a financing vehicle for one of DeSantis’ top priorities: immigration.

☠️☠️Gearing up for a presidential run and enjoying an iron grip over the GOP Legislature, DeSantis declared a state of emergency on immigration — one that he’s renewed at least 20 times since.

This opened the fund’s dollars to immigration enforcement, allowing FDEM to spend $573 million out of it since 2023 — 98% of which was paid for in the past year. This is largely because of the so-called “Alligator Alcatraz” and “Deportation Depot,” facilities, state-run detention centers erected last summer, lauded by President Trump, and mirrored by Republican states nationwide.

But these costs represent just a fraction of the total to be spent on immigration.

As the Phoenix previously reported, immigration contracts signed by FDEM are valued at roughly💰💰💰 $1.01 billion. This doesn’t include isolated immigration costs like food, supplies, or travel.
FDEM still owes the vendors that built and ran the facilities at least another half a billion dollars.

Despite those outstanding costs, the fund has under $7 million left.

💰💰Lawmakers approved another $250 million for the trust in June, but FDEM hasn’t asked for the money yet.

❌❌The agency also missed the deadline for a new quarterly report detailing the fund’s health and cash projections, a requirement lawmakers added this year.

Representatives of the Senate president and House speaker told the Phoenix they had not received the report, ‼️‼️which was due five days ago. FDEM did not respond to questions about when it would submit the information.

Immigration spending from the fund last fiscal year exceeded the individual costs of several past emergency responses, including Hurricane Idalia, Hurricane Debby, Hurricane Nicole, and evacuation flights for Americans from Israel and Haiti.

💰💰💰The estimated $1.01 billion in immigration-related contracts, meanwhile, would rank as the third-largest use of the trust since its creation, behind only Hurricane Ian ($2.5 billion) and Hurricane Milton ($1.5 billion).

BREAKING: Hegseth MELTED DOWN and accused a senator of "Trump derangement syndrome" after being confronted with his own failed war claims in antagonistic Senate hearing.

Pete Hegseth walked into today's Senate Appropriations Committee hearing hoping to sail through a routine budget request.

Instead, he got cornered twice, and by the end, he was reduced to screaming about "Trump derangement syndrome" at a sitting United States senator.

Senator Jon Ossoff opened by honoring the sacrifices of American service members — expressing "immense gratitude and admiration" for Georgians who served, along with condolences for the four killed in action and hopes for recovery for the nearly 100 wounded over just the last two weeks. Two weeks. Not at the start of this war. Now.

Then Ossoff got to the numbers. Hegseth is requesting $67 billion in emergency supplemental funding to keep this war funded — a staggering sum for a conflict Trump promised would last "four to five weeks."

But Ossoff's sharpest moment came when he read Hegseth's own words back to him. On day 14 of this war, nearly five months ago, Hegseth publicly declared Iran's military had been "destroyed" and "made combat ineffective." Confronted with that claim today, Hegseth had no choice but to walk it back in real time, admitting Iran's military capabilities are merely at "the lowest level they've been in a very long time" — a far cry from "destroyed."

But it was Senator Gary Peters who really lit the fuse. Peters pointed out that Iran's missiles hitting recent targets are somehow MORE lethal and maneuverable than before, that the Strait of Hormuz — open before Trump's war — remains closed, driving up prices for everyone, and that American service members are still dying. "So what's different, Secretary Hegseth?" he asked.

Hegseth didn't answer. He attacked. He accused Peters of "smearing the sacrifice of the troops" and thundered, "Shame on you." When Peters asked plainly whether Iran's nuclear material is still there, Hegseth dodged into a speech about troop "intensity."

Then Peters delivered the line of the day: "You, sir, are the failure. Not the men and women who are on that front line... but if there's a lack of a winning strategy, their leaders have failed them. You don't have a strategy. When will you show leadership?"

Hegseth's response was pure deflection: "Why don't you show some leadership and stand up for your fellow Democrats who won't fund the troops... you have Trump derangement syndrome and can't actually commit to anything meaningful."

Peters wasn't having it: "You have over a trillion dollars. It's not a question of money. It's a question of leadership."

Chair Susan Collins had to gavel the hearing closed before Hegseth could dig himself any deeper.

Nearly five months into a war Trump promised would take five weeks. $67 billion requested. American troops still dying. And when confronted with hard questions, America's Secretary of Defense chose to scream insults rather than answer for his own failures.

In Washington state, the Swinomish and Squaxin Island Tribes are suing over Chinook salmon in the Skagit River and Puget Sound, the same salmon their treaties guarantee them the right to fish, forever.

Those treaties don’t mean much if there’s no fish left to catch.

Here’s why this is happening now:

On July 10, the Interior Department erased a 50-year-old legal definition of “harm” under the Endangered Species Act. Habitat destruction alone no longer counts. Only direct killing or injury does.

Swinomish Chairman Steve Edwards put it plainly: you can’t recover a fish whose home you’re allowed to destroy.

Squaxin Island’s Joe Peters said it sharper: his people have fished these waters for thousands of years, and salmon recovery has never worked without protecting where they live.

And it’s not just the salmon. Puget Sound’s critically endangered orcas depend on this exact run to survive.

Who gets to erase a 170 year old treaty promise, straight out of somebody else’s playbook?
