$SIVE takes a 1.6T pluggable module and an external light source prototype to CIOE, pitching its laser arrays for the point where copper runs out
TAIPEI, Sept. 15 — Sivers Semiconductors (Nasdaq Stockholm: $SIVE) brought two products to its booth at this year's China International Optoelectronic Expo, DIGITIMES reported on Tuesday: a 1.6T pluggable optical transceiver now ramping toward the mainstream, and a prototype module built for external light source architectures. The report cast Sivers' laser arrays as an answer to the limits of copper interconnect. It went out at 12:45 Taipei time, a little over two hours before the Stockholm market opened.
The booth, 4C216 in Hall 4 of the lasers and intelligent manufacturing section in Shenzhen, is listed in the organizer's exhibitor directory with products that run from single lasers up to arrays: 8- and 16-channel O-band CW DFB edge-emitting laser arrays for CW-WDM, a 1310nm 70 mW DR8 DFB laser "optimized for 800G, 1.6T and above transceivers," multi-emitter laser arrays for optical I/O and co-packaged optics, SOAs and gain chips on the company's InP100 indium phosphide platform, and sources optimized for silicon photonics flip-chip hybrid integration.
The 1.6T module traces back to April 15, when Sivers said Jabil ($JBL) plans to develop a 1.6T linear receive optical pluggable transceiver using Sivers' DFB lasers for next-generation hyperscale AI data centers. "Energy efficiency is now a hard requirement in AI infrastructure scaling," Alex McCann, managing director of Sivers' photonics business, said in that release. Jason Wildt, vice president and general manager of photonics at Jabil, said customers "are pushing for more bandwidth without increasing power consumption." The release cited a LightCounting forecast that 800G and faster transceivers will make up 80 percent of the pluggables market by 2030, when shipments are projected to reach 225 million units.
The external light source work goes back further. On March 17 Sivers, O-Net Technologies (HKEX: 0877) and Enablence Technologies (TSXV: ENA) announced an ELS module built from Sivers laser arrays and Enablence's NxN star coupler, with O-Net as ODM, to support the roll-out of co-packaged optics in AI data centers and HPC systems. "ELS is a crucial companion to CPO because it separates temperature-sensitive lasers from the extreme heat of high-power processors, ensuring wavelength stability and significantly enhancing system reliability and serviceability," McCann said. The release said CPO delivers optical interconnects with 80 percent lower energy consumption compared to copper, and cited an IDTechEx estimate that the CPO market will exceed USD 20 billion by 2036, growing at 37 percent a year from 2026, with ELS making up 10 percent of it.
Two more releases built on that line. On June 2 GlobalFoundries ($GFS) said Sivers' laser arrays will be integrated into reference designs on its silicon photonics platform and made available in its SCALE co-packaged light engine platform, covering CPO, linear pluggable optics and other interconnects. On Aug. 13 Sivers announced a USD 3.4 million program with SemiNex for next-generation InP light sources, covering high-power external laser sources for CPO, high-channel-count DFB arrays and SOA gain stages, with customer sampling and early production ramps targeted for the second half of 2027. "The optical layer is becoming the constraint on how far AI infrastructure can scale," SemiNex chief executive Ronald Moore said.
Capacity is being put in place alongside. On Sept. 3 Sivers said it will invest USD 30 million to expand its indium phosphide fab in Glasgow to more than 100 million continuous-wave DFB lasers a year, with the plant expected to be operational in the fourth quarter of 2027. In its second-quarter report on Aug. 27 the company put its opportunity pipeline at USD 1.2 billion as of July, up 268 percent from the end of 2025, and said it expects the impact of its shift from NRE work to product ramps "to become visible in Q4 2026 and accelerate through 2027 as multiple programs progress toward volume production." Chief executive Vickram Vathulya said the company's North Star "remains delivering to our long-term financial model from 2028 onwards."
