Small lifehack for anyone who saw the OpenAI DevDay Chromatic and wants to vibecode Game Boy games: you don't need to pay $3-4k on eBay for it.
The ChatGPT Codex plugin (ModRetro Chromatic, Plugins tab in the Codex app) builds GB/GBC games on its own. It's GB Studio under the hood, and GB Studio exports straight to Analogue Pocket.
How it works:
1. Describe the game to Codex, test it in the emulator
2. Export as .pocket
3. Drop it into a "GB Studio" folder on the microSD
4. On the Pocket: Tools β GB Studio β Play Creations
Why I'd take the Pocket:
+ 3.5" 1600Γ1440 screen vs 2.56" 160Γ144
+ GB, GBC and GBA carts out of the box + adapters for Game Gear, Lynx, Neo Geo Pocket
+ All your Codex games on one microSD, pick from a menu. The Chromatic blank cart holds one game, every new one means reflashing
+ Built in battery, USB-C, TV dock
+ openFPGA cores for NES, SNES, Genesis and more
To be fair, the DevDay Chromatic looks great and it's a cool piece of history. If you want it for the collection, go for it.
But for actually making and playing games with Codex, the Pocket is the better deal. Same games, bigger screen, way more console.
And flashing that blank cart needs a dev mode code that only came with the DevDay units anyway π
@sama Of course it's your favorite. It's the reason we don't get resets anymore π
In the EU we don't even have dots, so we only got the gravity well of dread part: halved plans, weekly limits and +$300 for "Maximum power". Stonks π
Nobody's angry because they can't leave. I already canceled one of my two x20 subs, and 20% of my Claude x20 now covers what both Codex subs did. So yes, we can leave. That's not the point.
With 5.6 one x20 lasted me a whole month of real work. It was so good I bought a second one and moved more of my work to Codex. After Astra both burned in days. Now it's half of that, and I'm moving everything back: skills, agents, bots, all the setup I built around Codex. That's the "0 downside" nobody counts.
What people are angry about is that nothing gets called what it is. Halving the $200 plan is "changing how we calculate the usage". Pro messages going from 200 to 100 is "more work done over time". No resets because Dots are "virtually unlimited", except Dots don't even exist in the EU and will probably end up as a paid add-on anyway. And the $500 plan is "Maximum power", while it's basically the old x20 +5 on top for $300 more.
Just say subsidies are over and prices go up. People would grumble and move on. The credits are cool, but they'll be gone in a month and the cut stays.
Same thing I wrote under Tibo's post. The cuts themselves I get, subsidies can't last forever. What I don't get is the packaging.
$200 went from x20 to x10, so the $500 plan for x25 doesn't look bad. Getting back to roughly where we were now costs $300 more. Pro messages halved. No resets, and in the EU no dots either. And on Astra it gets worse: already saw someone burn 10% of the $500 weekly limit in 3 minutes on Medium ultra fast.
All of it called "more value" and "more work done".
Just say it straight: subsidies are over, everything costs real money now. People would take that better than being told a 50% cut is a gift.

ππ€£π€£π€£ Tell that to the EU.
No dots here. We used to pay $200 for x20, now it's x10 so the $500 plan doesn't look so bad. Getting from the old x20 to x25 now costs an extra $300. Pro messages cut in half too.
And that's before the next "optimizations", when models start eating tokens again and the weekly limit lasts a couple of days. $500 for two days of work, no resets, no dots. Already saw a post where ultra fast on Astra Medium burned 10% of the $500 weekly limit in 3 minutes lol.
Maybe just say it: subsidies and the free ride are over, everything costs real money now. Instead of "more value", "unlimited access" (no) and all that. Wild.

So yeah, no magic with the $500 Pro. x20 with Astra was already burning through limits fast, and x25 isn't much of a step up. 10% of a $500 plan in 3 min, damn. @ChatGPT nice job
Had Astra on ultrafast (on med reasoning) rebuild 1-1 from scratch on the modretro they gave us at Dev Day yesterday
- Took ~3 mins
- Used 4 subagents
- Used ~10% of my weekly limit ($500/mo. plan)
Ultrafast should rarely be used, but I'm ngl when u do use it it's really cool
Agree, maybe not a scam. But nobody from the team, Tibo included, just said it straight: sorry guys, it's hard for us, time to rebalance the plans, we can't grow like this. Instead we got this bullshit about limits going down while we'll somehow get even more capabilities and features.
I remember working actively for a whole month on Sol 5.6, like I do now on Opus 5.5. Then Astra came out and for a month every x20 limit was gone in days. Had to buy a second x20. Everything that isn't Astra is lazy and dumb, and even on those the limits melted. Sol 6.1 made it better. Just better, not like it used to be.
And now they tell me with a straight face that going from x20 to x10 is an upgrade, and to keep x25 (roughly the old x20) I need to pay $300. Feels like someone is trying to screw you over.
The Codex team knows their audience on X. Lots of people here can do the math and know what the features are actually worth. Selling this as a step so everyone uses dots bots and a couple of other features is abysmal. Ultrafast mode is even better. Once I turned on regular fast while waiting for a reset: 2 hours of Astra medium on fast and voilΓ , 5% of limits left :) Can't imagine ultrafast.
We're all adults here and we get it. I just don't get why it's communicated like we're idiots.
