A security guard at Hayfields Primary School in Pietermaritzburg is being praised after he reportedly stayed behind long after his shift ended to protect two six-year-old learners allegedly left stranded outside school for more than five hours.
The children had finished school at 12:30 but were still at the school gate at 18:00.
The guard reportedly missed his own transport home while staying with the hungry and frightened children until help arrived. They were later taken to Alexandra SAPS, fed by Romanโs Pizza Hayfields, and eventually collected by a shocked family member.
The school says it is now reviewing procedures to prevent a similar incident from happening again.
GUMEDE'S PLAN FOR SUGAR INDUSTRY
South African businessman Robert Gumede says the Tongaat Hulett crisis is not simply a financial collapse, but the result of years of cheap imported sugar damaging the local industry.
He argues that subsidised sugar imports, particularly from Brazil, have destroyed profitability, threatened jobs and weakened rural economies in KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga.
Gumede says Vision has already committed more than R5bn to rescue Tongaat Hulett, but warns private investment alone cannot save the sector without stronger government action.
He is calling for urgent anti-dumping measures, state partnership and support for diversification into ethanol and electricity production to secure the industryโs future.

My brother-in-law runs his own data center/GPU farm at home.
Currently makes him ~$3k/month profit. 30% solar powered. Aiming to get to 60% by end of this summer which will increase profits significantly (mostly down to adding batteries, not panels), then will buy more GPUs.
He sells the compute via some 3rd party service that takes a cut. Apparently a lot of ML/rendering workloads.
You can just do stuff!
