Uganda’s tourism sector has been prioritised in the FY 2026/27 National Budget, following resolutions from the Presidential @PCF_Uganda CEO Forum’s 6th Bi-Annual Tourism CEO Retreat. Government and private sector stakeholders recently convened to validate a roadmap aimed at accelerating tourism growth and supporting Uganda’s Ten-Fold Growth Economy Agenda.

The sector continues to deliver strong results:
✅ 1.64 million international visitor arrivals in 2025 (+19.7% from 2024)
✅ UGX 5.83 trillion in tourism earnings
✅ 5.9% contribution to GDP
✅ Over 876,000 jobs supported. Tourism remains a key driver of investment, employment and foreign exchange earnings.

Key priorities in the FY 2026/27 Budget include strengthening destination marketing, improving tourism infrastructure, diversifying tourism products, enhancing service standards, supporting conservation, accelerating digital transformation, and deepening public-private partnerships to unlock the sector’s full potential. @ugwildlife @TourismBoardUg

Tourism remains one of Uganda’s most resilient sectors, but it is also among the most vulnerable to external shocks. Speaking during the National Budget Month launch, #KnowYourBudget26, PS at @MTWAUganda Mrs.@KatusiimeDor, said the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the DRC has already affected the industry through cancellations, despite Uganda’s strong capacity to manage outbreaks.

“The tourism sector is a very sensitive sector. Right now, we have been hit by the Ebola outbreak in DRC.Uganda has very good capacity in managing outbreaks, but the private sector in tourism has been hard hit,” she said, noting that many visitors book trips months or even a year in advance, making cancellations particularly costly for operators. Government is now looking at measures to support the sector’s recovery while maintaining growth momentum.

PS said increasing tourist arrivals, boosting tourism earnings and extending visitor stay will be key priorities in FY2026/27, with destination marketing taking centre stage. “Our priorities for this coming financial year are increasing arrivals, increasing tourism earnings and increasing the length of stay,” she said. She credited the @mofpedU and @UgandaMFA for advancing economic and commercial diplomacy, adding that Uganda’s missions abroad will play an even greater role in promoting tourism and investment opportunities.

The tourism sector is also positioning itself to benefit from #AFCON2027. “This is going to be a big one for us as tourism because it is going to bring in a lot of numbers,” Katusiime said. Government is assessing accommodation capacity, restaurants and other visitor services while exploring support for hospitality facilities in host areas to ensure Uganda is ready to welcome the expected influx of visitors.

On conservation, she said government will continue investing in the protection of Uganda’s natural and cultural heritage. “We shall focus a lot on addressing human-wildlife conflict in areas adjacent to protected areas, but also on fighting poaching and other things that affect our conservation.” These efforts are intended to safeguard biodiversity while improving coexistence between wildlife and neighbouring communities.

Katusiime highlighted infrastructure development as one of the sector’s biggest priorities going forward. “We are doing a lot of infrastructure improvement, which was not very common under the tourism sector,” she said. Key projects include; redevelopment of the Source of the Nile with a modern pier, entertainment centre and observation deck; renovation, expansion and digitisation of the Uganda Museum, and continued investment in the Rwenzori Mountains through boardwalks, climbing ladders and accommodation facilities closer to Margherita Peak.

Additional projects scheduled for completion include the Karamoja Museum in Moroto, the Kabalega-Mwanga heritage site in Dokolo, upgrades at the Equator site in Kayabwe and visitor facilities at the Chimpanzee Monument in Kasese. “We are going to focus on stopovers and refreshment centres because they are critical visitor facilities,” she said, underscoring government’s commitment to improving the overall visitor experience as part of a broader strategy to grow Uganda’s tourism sector in FY2026/27 and beyond. @TourismBoardUg @ExploreUganda @GovUganda @ACODE_Uganda @PSF_Uganda @rggoobi @ugwildlife
