El Papa se detuvo en silencio ante una placa que casi nadie mira. Dice solo dos palabras en latín: "Hic ceciderunt": Aquí cayeron.

Aquí, el 2 de septiembre de 1792, unos 115 sacerdotes y obispos fueron asesinados durante las Masacres de Septiembre, tras negarse a renunciar a su fidelidad a la Iglesia.

¿Por qué los mataron? Por negarse a prestar juramento a la Constitución Civil del Clero, una ley que ponía a los sacerdotes bajo el control del Estado y que había sido condenada por el Vaticano.

Los encerraron en un convento carmelita y en menos de dos horas los masacraron turbas sedientas de sangre.

En total, 191 mártires, beatificados en 1926 por Pío XI.

El sábado, antes de su encuentro en el Instituto Católico de París, León XIV quiso rezar justo ahí, en el Parcours des Martyrs, donde más de 100 obispos y sacerdotes franceses fueron asesinados en 1792.

Francia quiso borrar a Dios con sangre. Hoy un Papa vuelve a ponerlos de pie con una oración.

Sister Wilhelmina Lancaster was Black.

But she refused to let the color of her skin define her.

When someone told her, “You’re Black first and Catholic second,” she responded:

“To be black is nothing. To be Catholic is everything.”

Her mother taught her this same perspective from childhood.

During segregation, Black Catholics were required to receive Holy Communion after white Catholics.

Her mother told her not to worry about where she stood in line.

Why?

Because receiving Jesus in the Eucharist was the privilege, even if they had to be last.

Fred Pepperman, a Catholic father from Tennessee, gave his life in 2019 while rescuing his three daughters from a deadly rip current off the coast of Florida.

The 53-year-old father entered the water to save his daughters and succeeded in getting them to safety, but he became exhausted and drowned. His family later recalled his words to one of his daughters: “I got you.”

Fred’s family attended Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Townsend, Tennessee. His wife said their Catholic faith helped the family endure the tragedy.

Our Lady of La Salette is the title given to the Virgin Mary in a reported apparition that took place on September 19, 1846, high in the French Alps near the small village of La Salette-Fallavaux. Two poor, barely literate shepherd children, Mélanie Calvat, not quite fifteen, and Maximin Giraud, eleven, were watching cattle on a mountain slope when they saw a globe of light and, within it, a woman seated and weeping, her face buried in her hands. She rose, called them closer without fear, and spoke to them for some time in French and then in their local dialect.

The woman they described wore the clothing of the region, a long dress, shawl, apron, and bonnet, yet everything about her shone. Roses circled her head, her shawl, and her feet. A large crucifix hung from her neck. She wept throughout her words. She told the children that her people had grown careless: they worked on Sundays, they took the name of her Son in vain, they neglected prayer and the Mass. If they did not turn back, she said, she would be forced to let go the arm of her Son, and famine and other sufferings would follow. She also spoke of mercy if they converted. Before leaving she entrusted each child with a personal secret and told them to make her message known to all her people. Then she climbed the slope and vanished in light.

The children told their employers that evening. The parish priest soon heard the account, and word spread. A spring that had been dry began to flow at the site. After investigation the Bishop of Grenoble declared in 1851 that the apparition bore the marks of truth and that the faithful were justified in believing it. A sanctuary rose on the mountain, and pilgrims have come ever since. The title Our Lady of La Salette therefore names not a historical woman of flesh and blood in the ordinary sense, but Mary as she was said to have shown herself that afternoon: a mother in tears calling her children back to God through conversion, Sabbath rest, reverence for the holy name, and hope that reconciliation remains possible.

Pragnę zapisać jeden sen, który miałam o św. Teresce od Dzieciątka Jezus. Jeszcze byłam nowicjuszką i miałam pewne trudności, w których nie mogłam sobie poradzić. Trudności te były wewnętrzne i połączone z trudnościami zewnętrznymi. Wiele nowenn odprawiłam do różnych świętych, jednak sytuacja stawała się coraz cięższa. Cierpienia moje z tego powodu były tak wielkie, że już nie wiedziałam, jak dalej żyć, ale nagle przyszła mi myśl, żebym się modliła do św. Teresy od Dzieciątka Jezus. Zaczęłam nowennę do tej
świętej, ponieważ przed wstąpieniem miałam do niej wielkie nabożeństwo. Teraz trochę się w
nim opuściłam, ale w tej potrzebie znowu z całą gorliwością zaczęłam się modlić. W piątym
dniu nowenny śni mi się św. Teresa, ale jakoby była jeszcze na ziemi. Ukryła przede mną
świadomość, że jest święta i zaczęła mnie pocieszać, żebym się tak nie smuciła z powodu tej
sprawy, ale więcej ufała Bogu. Mówi mi, że i ja cierpiałam bardzo wiele, a ja nie
dowierzałam jej, że ona dużo cierpiała i mówiłam jej, że mnie się zdaje, że ty nic nie cierpisz.
Jednak Teresa św. odpowiedziała mi przekonywująco, że wiele cierpiał i powiedziała mi:
Siostro, niech Siostra wie, że na trzeci dzień Siostra tę sprawę załatwi jak najpomyślniej.
Kiedy ja nie bardzo chciałam jej wierzyć, wtem ona daje mi się poznać, że jest święta. W tej
chwili duszę moja napełniła radość i mówię do niej. – Tyś jest święta, a ona mi powiada, że
tak, jestem święta i ufaj, że sprawę tę załatwisz na trzeci dzień. I powiedziałam do niej,
Tereniu święta, powiedz mi, czy będę w niebie? – Odpowiedziała mi, ze będzie Siostra w
niebie. – A czy będę święta? – Odpowiedziała mi, że będzie Siostra święta. Ale, Tereniu, czy
ja będę tak święta, jak Ty, na ołtarzach? A ona mi odpowiedziała – tak, będziesz święta jak i
ja, ale musisz ufać Panu Jezusowi. – Zapytałam się jej, czy ojciec i matka będą w niebie, czy
[niedokończone] – odpowiedziała mi – będą. I zapytałam dalej – a czy siostry i bracia moi
będą w niebie? – Odpowiedziała mi, żebym się modliła za nich bardzo, a nie dała mi pewnej
odpowiedzi. Zrozumiałam, że potrzebują dużo modlitwy.
To jest sen i jak to mówi przysłowie: - sen mara, a Bóg wiara, ale jednak na trzeci
dzień załatwiłam tę trudna sprawę jako mi powiedziała, z tak wielka łatwością. Jak mi
powiedziała dosłownie się spełniło wszystko co do tej sprawy. To jest sen, ale on miał swoje
