There are many stories--brilliant, funny, poignant and triumphant--to tell about the 30-year career of @NCStateBaseball coach Elliott Avent. Maybe I'll tell some in the coming days.

None mean more to me than the moments he spent with our friend Bruce Winkworth, his sports information director for 20+ years. Coach was the last person who spoke to Bruce before his death on May 17, 2019, and the first person to speak at his funeral.

Other than his wife Rita and their dogs, Bruce had a main true love: baseball, specifically #Pack9 baseball.

Elliott made sure he was as big a part of Avent's staff and the program as any player, coach, team manager or administrator. Coach did the same thing, in different ways, for many others.

Thanks for the 1,071 wins, the development of great players and the postseason success, sure, but mostly thanks for being the most enthusiastic and dedicated supporter of the broader NC State community that I know and for wrapping your arms around Bruce throughout his life and his final days. (He especially appreciated the win over UNC-CH on the day he died.)

This picture is of Coach Avent the funeral, giving an NC State baseball to Bruce's brother Doug. It was near the end of the 2019 season, and Elliott filed his entire team into the pews of a local church to show their appreciation for a job well done.

For that, I'm sure Bruce is smiling at the Great Official Scorer's Table in the Sky on hearing of Avent's impending retirement, saying "Right back at you, Skip."
