So, is the Ministry of Ed directing boards to bank on parents continuing to keep kids out of FDK?
That seems like a bad plan if you also hope all eligible Ontarians can have a 2-dose summer and "get back to normal" (ie: work) soon after.
The ministry memo notes a "significant unexpected
enrolment decline as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic of about 40,000 fewer students". The board memo in 1st tweet says it was primarily in JK/SK. The Stat Can doesn't say 40K young kids just vanished.
Here's the Stat Can data on projected population of kids in the province (Table 17-10-0005-01). Overall, pretty stable, with some modest growth in those about to be JK-eligible and in/entering grades 5-9ish.
What is this enrolment uncertainty? Here's the direction from the Ministry of Ed to local boards:
Note: 1) projecting enrolment decline (consistent with board-level memo in 1st tweet) and 2) while it was "unexpected" it is now projected to continue this year.
@ONeducation Through this year of disrupted learning, constant screen time and isolation, I can confirm that we are NOT happy with online learning for our children. Parents are stressed, kids are lonely and not enjoying online school. Please #openschools
@ONeducation We need more than monetary support, we need our schools to be open. We need our children to be with other children and teachers face to face. Crafting together, utilizing the hands on tools and resources that we have invested in with our tax dollars. #openschools
@ONeducation@ONeducation parents need to know! Release the attendance and participation numbers for 2020 and 2021. Remote Learning for young kids and families has been unstable, increasingly problematic for career oriented parents, disruptive and difficult. #openschools
We must not forget that 27,000 young Dreamers work as doctors, nurses, paramedics, pharmacists, and other health providers as we are fighting the coronavirus pandemic.
We have got to stand with them and block Trump's insane effort to end the DACA program.
