MR PRICE SOUNDS ALARM ON GAMBLING
Mr Price has warned that online gambling is becoming a major competitor for consumer spending in South Africa.
Despite growing revenue to R42.7bn and surpassing R6bn in operating profit for the first time, the retailer says discretionary spending remains under pressure.
Mr Price CEO Mark Blair (pictured) highlighted the rapid rise of online betting, which is drawing money away from purchases such as clothing, footwear and homeware.
The gambling sector generated billions in revenue last year, with most bets placed via smartphones.
While Mr Price continues to outperform rivals through its value-focused strategy, it remains cautious amid economic uncertainty and changing consumer spending habits.

They broke ground in January this year, and the first batch of students is expected to be welcomed in January 2028.
The campus includes: learning centres, a library, offices, an amphitheatre, coffee shops, a cafeteria, a student centre, lecture rooms and laboratories. There will also be a student residence housing 750 students.
These facilities will be used by 400 staff members and 2500 students daily.
This is a huge project; during ground earthworks in 2025, they removed 360,000 m3 of soil from the site. The campus infrastructure also includes:
• 40km fibre cables
• 23km of underground water pipes
• 19.3 million litres of water storage
• 30 000m2 tar for roads and parking
