Parliament session to vote on Zaidi’s cabinet is about to get started soon.

Except the other half of the story that Trita is conveniently leaving out is the one where Iran worked to keep post-Saddam Iraq weak & fractured as well. Just as there is American presence, there is malign Iranian interference, so each side has to live with the consequences.
📻 Spoke with @TheWorld’s @MarcoWerman today.
With war on its doorstep, #Iraq taps a political outsider to become prime minister https://t.co/J0tjDYittY
The question of whether to bring back compulsory military service has returned. It seems like every new parliament or administration raises the question. Former MP @MPSarkawtShams wrote a great piece on the issue back in November 2022 for @IraqiThoughts. https://t.co/UmrHzP9Pnz
The Coordination Framework concluded its meeting at Al-Mandlawi’s residence, settled the dispute, and agreed to postpone the presidential election session for ten days. The move effectively frustrated attempts by a faction that had been pushing to hold the session while sidelining a key pillar of the country—namely, Barzani and his party.

In Iraq, a struggle is underway between two opposing forces:
1- The State: This approach is led by the head of the Supreme Judicial Council, Faiq Zaidan, who has repeatedly declared his commitment to imposing state authority and consolidating its control.
2- The Parties: This approach is led by certain parties and factions belonging to the Coordination Framework and allied with Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani. These parties are indifferent to the security chaos and consider the formation of a new government under al-Sudani the priority. They are striving to convene a parliamentary session to elect a prime minister, even if Barzani, the leader closest to the international community, boycotts it.
If the Iraq's future remains beholden to narrow partisan interests, we going down an extremely dangerous path.
Following the Iraqi National Security Council's decision to authorise the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) to "respond to attacks," Faiq Zaidan expresses a principled stance against circumventing constitutional mechanisms to declare a state of war. He also highlights the danger of militant groups dragging Iraq into the current military confrontation.
When the executive branch is beholden to a legislature dominated by armed factions, the judiciary represents the final bulwark against militant recklessness.

A must read well informed analysis of Iraq's situation in the midst of the ongoing conflict.
It is also worth noting that Sistani's statement was a compromise against strong Iranian pressure to announce "jihad" against the Americans, following the assassination of Khamanaei
Iran's Neighbours Keep Close Eye As Crisis Unfolds
I spoke with @AFP about how #Iraq would respond if the situation in #Iran escalates further, and pointed out Iraq’s strength comes from its ability to speak with both Iran and the United States.

Tackling the issue of militant factions weappns will never be exactly smooth.
The clarity shown recently by Judge Faiq Zaidan about disarmament sparked a public backlash from KH head.
Tough choices await Iraqi leaders as they go through the process of government formation.
One of the main tasks of the Supreme Court is the ratification of election results. With nine members missing, the court is unable to convese. Unless judges are (re)appointed, we are heading towards a constitutional crisis later this year.
Mass resignations at the Iraqi Supreme Court. Outgoing judges complained about "politicisation" and "authoritarianism" by the head of the Court.
A very significant development impacting the structure of the Iraqi political system amidst historical levels of regional turmoil.
