PRESIDENT MUSEVENI & THE CHIEF JUSTICE ALREADY KNOW TOOROβS NEXT KING: HEREβS WHY;
In 1999 Tooro Kingdom Constitution established a formal procedure through which an Omukama could nominate a successor. The nomination was not supposed to be a casual declaration. It was to be made in writing, signed by the reigning King and witnessed by specified royal officials and other chosen persons.
But there was another provision, one that makes the current succession dispute particularly interesting.
THE NAME WAS TO BE KEPT SECRET:
Under that framework, the documented name of the nominated successor was to only be confidentially communicated to the President of Uganda and the Chief Justice, with the information remaining confidential until the reigning Omukamaβs death.
That creates a fascinating constitutional trail.
If a valid nomination was made under that procedure, the identity of the nominated successor could have been known inside the highest offices of the Ugandan state long before the Batooro were ever told.
AND THEN KING OYO DIED
King Oyo Nyimba died on August 27, 2026. Since then, Tooro has been confronted with competing succession narratives with claims surrounding a reported biological son and a will on one side, and the royal clanβs selection process on the other. President Museveni himself has publicly referred to Oyo having left a young son (heir).
The royal succession committee subsequently selected Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, Oyoβs cousin, as successor, triggering objections from members of Oyoβs immediate family.
WHY IS PRESIDENT MUSEVENI QUIET?
President Museveni is not a man known for rushing into every fire the moment it starts burning. Heβs a strategic leader, heβll first allow the different interests, personalities and fault lines within a dispute to reveal themselves. Who is taking which position? Who is escalating the situation? Who is genuinely seeking reconciliation? And who is positioning themselves for power?
Once everyone has shown their hand, intervention becomes much easier and knows who exactly to deal with.
A more chaotic succession actually serve his interests, it allows the competing sides to expose themselves, map the fault lines, and identify the key players before moving to restore order.
In the NRA/UPDF military strategy, itβs called βkuwachunguza aduiβ or studying the adversary.
May God bless you with family, cousins or people like these, cousins who, even in your absence and after your death, still have the courage to stand up for you in the face of criticism, without expecting applause, recognition, or even thanks from you.
People who can stand against their own and are willing to create enemies when they believe you have been wronged.
That is more than family. It is loyalty that survives death, distance, and every difficult choice.
WHAT A DISGRACE! WHAT HAS TOORO COME TO?
The last time I can remember, Andrew Mwenda lost his nephew, Rubani (pictured below), and he has never stopped mourning him to this day.
Yet Best Kemigisa has barely had the space to bury her own son before Mwenda rushes to declare that she holds no special place in the Tooro Kingdom.
Mwenda, this is the woman who was Queen Mother to the very King whose throne you are fighting over. You cannot spend years arguing about the legitimacy, history and future of a throne, then suddenly erase the significance of the woman who occupied one of its most important traditional positions especially while she is mourning the death of her son.
Do you truly understand what it means to bury a son? Your own son. Your own child. To give birth to someone, watch them grow, and then be the one standing at their corpse.
You know what it means to mourn for your nephew, Rubani. You have carried that grief publicly and repeatedly. So why deny Best Kemigisa the same human dignity?
Before you debate her place in Tooro, remember that she is a mother who has just lost her son. A grieving mother should not have to defend her place in a Kingdom while burying her son.
