A fourth wildland firefighter has died from injuries suffered in a burnover while battling the Knowles Fire near the Utah-Colorado border, federal officials announced Saturday.

Nathan Matthews, 43, of Lincoln, Nebraska, died Friday, July 24, from burn injuries sustained June 27 during initial attack operations on the fire in western Colorado, the U.S. Department of the Interior said.

Matthews was assigned to the Rifle Helitack crew and was one of five firefighters overtaken by flames. Three colleagues — Emily Barker, 38, of Clinton Township, Michigan; Nick Hutcherson, 27, of Glendale, Arizona; and Sydney Watson, 27, of Warrior, Alabama — died at the scene. Matthews had been receiving medical care for his burns.

“This is another heartbreaking loss for our wildland fire family,” U.S. Wildland Fire Service Chief Brian Fennessy said in a statement. “We mourn the loss of Nate while continuing to grieve the deaths of Emily, Nick and Sydney. Our hearts are with their families, friends, crewmates and everyone impacted by this tragedy.”

A serious accident investigation team continues to review the circumstances of the incident. Information on memorial services for Matthews will be released later, officials said.

The Knowles Fire was part of a series of blazes along the Colorado-Utah border that later merged into the larger Snyder Fire complex.
