Diagnosed at 24 years old, RA stole her youth, but not her dignity.

When her #rheumatoidarthritis was at its worst, simple tasks like holding a mug became insurmountable.

But as a young mother she faced flare-ups with unwavering strength, changing my nappies with her teeth when she had no strength left in her fingers.

In 1996, a lifeline appeared as she was granted #Disability Living Allowance and the Motability Scheme further eased her daily struggles and enabled her to work.

But in 2013 the Tories replaced DLA with #PersonalIndependencePayment in an attempt to weed out the “unworthy", subjecting her to a degrading 2019 re-assessment by a non-medical professional questioning her very worthiness.

My mum recalls the degradation she endured during the assessment.

The interviewer probed her independence in toileting, self-care & even the intimate act of wiping herself.

The person went so far as to comment on her seemingly effortless ability to retrieve her handbag, insinuating doubt about the extent of her #disability.

Compelled to showcase her capacity to stand and walk unaided, she faced the cruel irony that her ability to traverse 200 meters, though excruciating, worked against her.

#PersonalIndependencePayment, intended to alleviate the extra costs of long-term health conditions and disabilities, ultimately deemed her undeserving.

A choice impacting not just her freedom but exacerbating the deterioration of her already compromised health.

Now, as the #Tories intend to impose a "duty" on those with mobility & mental health issues to work from home or lose their benefits, I'm filled with rage for all they've subjected my mum and others like her to.

Their rhetoric demonises those silently battling unseen struggles, widening disparities & deepening the burdens of households grappling with #disability-induced anxieties.

Policies should uplift, especially those vulnerable among us. Instead, we witness the perpetuation of disparities—a punitive approach that adds weight to the already burdened shoulders of those living with #disabilities.

@kate_stockings @GrahamGeog Would recommend in London they get info from the London data store (based on land registry) . Can download and organise by LSOA to borough scale and also get averages for inner London, outer London, England and UK they can then consider trends- still lots of issues though.

@Geo_Dougie I made a similar switch and changed over to preferred diverse places which the students found way more interesting if a little less tangible. If you can maybe have a look at that option instead? It became one of my favourite to teach.

@kate_stockings We looked at how covid and globalisation which was really interesting and introduced lots of key ideas( was also what the students wanted to do at the time). Was done for the last two years so not sure how much more legs it has in but worked really well at both times.
