In 1995, 15-year-old Nicole van den Hurk set off for work on her bicycle but never arrived. Weeks later, her body was found in a forest, and the case remained unsolved for 16 years.

In 2011, her stepbrother Andy walked into a police station and confessed to killing her. But it was a lie.

He did it because he knew his confession would force the police to reopen the case and re-examine the evidence using new DNA techniques. The plan worked: the DNA found was not his, but that of a previously convicted rapist, who was ultimately arrested and sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Andy managed to solve his sister's murder by pretending to be her killer.

You told me you felt bad and they found cancer. You said you knew it was from the shots they pressured you to take in order to keep your job.
This morning I woke up, got on a boat to look out over the ocean. The first text I received said you were gone. As I look out over the water I am going to try to focus on all the good you did while you were here. All the people you helped as a paramedic. And I’m going to attempt to not allow my anger toward a corrupt system to overpower my appreciation of you.
