When children in primary school do maths they are encouraged to use manipulatives. Why, then, do we add a timer and remove manipulatives during SATs tests? It feels like it is a system designed to fail children.

@MissA2021x @TraineeTwinkl I always start with patterns. Get them to write their 4s out by just adding so they have a list.

They see that the endings are 0,4,8,2,6,0,4,8,2,6,0,4,8

Then the pattern 0,0,0,1,1,2,2,2,3,3,4,4,4
These are the starting numbers.

They race writing them out, and keep racing!

The question about what number is in the duck square. How do we solve this? They said 19 because 16 is sandwiched between 1 and 6 so the duck is between 1 and 9. But what number links them?

@TaskmasterEdu We've really struggled with the end today..the kids just decided to guess it after all the hard work throughout the week. The number that links them all was a step too far!
Disappointing ending.
They saw the number 16, decided the duck number must be 19 and gave up. Sad really.

I feel utterly depressed coming home to see the news so am going to focus on what is in my inner circle now. Today I taught music to 61 year 4 children (two classes) and it was utterly joyful. Maths is good. Maths quite frankly is VITAL. But the arts breathe life into the soul.
