Remember when the DA and EFF won a court case to prevent the VAT increase? Well, they saved each household R5,12 for every R1000 in food expenses.

Now, if they had fought and won against the latest electricity tariff increases, they would have saved every household at least R88 per R1000. With even much more substantial savings for households in metropolitan areas.

And then there's a second-order effect. Whereas in the VAT calculation many basic foods don't pay VAT, electricity costs do feed into the production and distribution costs behind those groceries.

So, when we look at the real cost-of-living impact, the electricity tariff increases should be a much more substantial target for political attention than the defeated 1% VAT increase. But, as always, political parties seem to have a special talent for picking pointless battles.
