"When the Prophet (pbuh) arrived at Al Madinah he found that the Jews were fasting on the day of 'Aashooraa. They were asked the reason for their fast. They replied, "This is the day when Allah gave Musa (Moses) and the children of Israel a victory over Fir'aun (Pharoah), so we fast on this day as a sign of gratitude to Allah." Allah's Messenger (pbuh) said, "We are closer to Musa than you." Then he ordered that fasting should be observed on this day."
