@anders_aslund People misread the tariffs as a bluff. They’re not. Because the goal of the tariffs is not to deal with trade imbalances in and of themselves - rather to nationalize the economy to insulate against outside interference after human rights abuses or similar.
@anders_aslund@MichaelFrankie6 No one invests in an autocratic country bc the risk is so high- at any moment a fascist leader can take your company, your assets, your resources by saying “That’s mine” just…on a whim. No one would do that without a LOT of guarantees- and even then…The US is higher risk now.
@AesPolitics1@zombat Biden did nothing for Palestine, Harris wasn’t going to either, this is on them- you have earn votes. It’s been clear for a long time that At Least Not Trump wasn’t going to work but they didn’t care and took us over the edge anyway
US law is clear: No nation blocking US humanitarian aid can receive US weapons.
Palestinian children are forced to eat pet food and bug infested flour, but @SecBlinken says there’s no need to change our policy. The Biden administration is refusing to comply with US law.
The New Zealand government is pulling back on protecting Māori rights, sparking protests from indigenous lawmakers who oppose the decision with their traditional “haka” chant.
This is powerful.
Just to be clear:
Dearborn has a population of 90,000.
40,000 are Arab.
In 2020, Biden won with 30,718 votes.
In 2024, Trump won with 17,796 votes.
The Arab population of Dearborn Michigan did not vote for Trump. They just abstained from voting.
Go yell at white ppl.
We have certainly never witnessed anything like this in human history: a whole people methodically destroyed before the eyes of the world, with full knowledge and complete visibility, happening in real time
Trump primarily mobilizes White people and men. Wins handily. After the election, Democratic pundits say mobilizing “identity groups” don’t work and “failed miserably,” erasing Trump’s mobilization of White and male identity groups. Instead, they claim Trump prevailed with a “working class coalition,” erasing the women and Black people who are disproportionately working class. Double erasure.
To be racist and sexist is to erase the presence of Black people, of women—and center White identity and male identity so profoundly that White people and men are no longer seen as “identity groups.”

I think one of the most difficult reckonings of this election is that the incentives we thought inspired voting choices -- a better life for your family and future for your community -- may not be as decisive as the desire to dominate and inflict cruelty on outgroups. Explanations that don't grapple with this point generally read to me like liberal wishcasting.
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will leave office in January with the minimum wage still at $7.25, seeing homelessness spike over 12%, and having participated in a genocide that has left at least 200,000 dead in Gaza.
This is also true if you responded to his election by throwing trans people and/or Palestinians under the bus. There is a large cohort of liberals who are on board with fascism now and they make us all less safe.
Crucial to remember as we try to make sense of “what it all means.”
There are 8x more non-voters as there are union members in this country.
If non-voters were counted, “abstain” would’ve won Arizona, Nevada, the popular vote, and the electoral college
