In 1956, the Congress wanted to merge Bengal with Bihar and create a new state called Purva Pradesh.

The proposal was known as the Roy-Sinha Declaration, named after B. C. Roy, the Chief Minister of Bengal, and S. K. Sinha, the Chief Minister of Bihar.

It was approved by the then PM Jawaharlal Nehru and the Congress Working Committee.

This proposal became one of the reasons for the rise of the Communists in Bengal. Congress faced massive protests, followed by defeats in municipal elections and by-elections.

After which Congress dropped the idea of Purva Pradesh.

আজ পশ্চিমবঙ্গ দিবস। 🌼

১৯৪৭ সালে বঙ্গভঙ্গের সংকটময় সময়ে পশ্চিমবঙ্গকে ভারতের অন্তর্ভুক্ত রাখার দাবিতে যে আন্দোলন গড়ে উঠেছিল, তার অন্যতম প্রধান মুখ ছিলেন ডঃ শ্যামাপ্রসাদ মুখোপাধ্যায়। এই আন্দোলনে সমর্থন জানিয়েছিলেন নেতাজি সুভাষচন্দ্র বসুর জ্যেষ্ঠ ভ্রাতা সতীশচন্দ্র বসুও। তাঁদের এবং অসংখ্য বাঙালির প্রচেষ্টার ফলেই পশ্চিমবঙ্গ ভারতের অংশ হিসেবে আত্মপ্রকাশ করে।

দীর্ঘদিন ধরে বামফ্রন্ট ও তৃণমূল কংগ্রেসের আমলে পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সৃষ্টির এই ইতিহাসকে প্রাপ্য গুরুত্ব দেওয়া হয়নি এবং জনচর্চার আড়ালে রাখা হয়েছিল। বর্তমানে বিজেপি সরকারের উদ্যোগে এই বিষয়টি আবার নতুন করে আলোচনার কেন্দ্রে এসেছে। আশা করি, ভবিষ্যতে পশ্চিমবঙ্গের গঠন ও বঙ্গভঙ্গ পরবর্তী এই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ইতিহাস পাঠ্যপুস্তকেও যথাযথ স্থান পাবে, যাতে নতুন প্রজন্ম নিজেদের অতীত সম্পর্কে আরও ভালোভাবে জানতে পারে।

বাংলার ইতিহাস, সংস্কৃতি ও ঐতিহ্যকে শ্রদ্ধার সঙ্গে স্মরণ করি।
