@Dr_Bookworm It is nonfiction. Oops! I remember thinking that he must have embellished and added his creative paintbrush, but he didn't. I just looked, and this is 100% fact. What a great convo I can share with my students next year! :) Thanks! #UNDTL528
A1: I really loved Erik Larson’s The Devil in the White City. It follows the Chicago World Fair as well as a serial killer who uses the Fair to lure his victims. I read it for pleasure and am looking forward to the movie adaptation. #UNDTL528
@Dr_Bookworm I have more thinking to do about this too :) I think that topic is SO important to delve into today. The more resources, examples, and conversations we can have the better. Our JH classes explore the Holocaust, but I want to explore deeper with my HS students. #UNDTL528
A6: I gravitated toward “other texts” that I see my students engaged with + excited about: Twitter, Instagram, Spotify, and Youtube. By thinking about these as tools to enhance literacy, I’ll have a more focused approach, which will help me better plan and integrate. #undtl528
@Dr_Bookworm I agree! I can't believe when I hear students say history is boring. I think historical fiction, BAM texts, and films can serve as great supports to the traditional learning that might occur in classrooms. #UNDTL528
A5: I teach HS, but I want to incorporate more children’s lit into my room. Looking at the WHOLE BOOK is something I want to stress. Thinking about author’s purpose and how they accomplish that goal is important. Picture books = source of quality analysis! #undtl528
@CarleyNelson14 It is so important to routinely take a step back and objectively look at our lessons, our units, and our resources to ensure we have a rounded and diverse curriculum! #UNDTL528
@Heather021972 I think they're also really valuable in teaching close-reading and analysis. The pictures, borders, colors, etc. are just as important as the words. This encourages critical thinking, which is necessary in our society today! #UNDTL528
A4: Its hard to pick a favorite, but I’m really intrigued by children’s fiction and graphic novels. I haven’t used either in a substantial way in my classroom, but I’m looking forward to integrating them into my curriculum. #UNDTL528
@abata228 Having a librarian as a resource is so helpful! What a great opportunity to collaborate to help students learn in a variety of ways. #UNDTL528
A3: When I teach Extremely Loud + Incredibly Close, I use multiple texts to help students investigate 9/11, NYC, and various tragedies. I incorporate poems, music, interviews, memoirs, and art. Kids seem to appreciate the variety. #UNDTL528
@abata228 Like our resources stated, historical fiction can help make history and the past more personal. When we see how individuals are impacted, it can become more engaging and meaningful. #UNDTL528
