Just because a student says "6" when they see 2x3= does not guarantee that they understand its meaning.
For deep conceptual understanding to take place, Ss also need to represent the concept in different ways and apply it in different contexts.

The concept of composing and decomposing is absolutely crucial in K and 1! I also LOVE the use of number bonds over fact families because number bonds emphasize that a number can be decomposed in so many different ways.
