Haven't been on Twitter since it became X, but getting excited about ALA in SD and wanted to share that I'll be running a workshop Sun 6/30 at 10 am - Zines as Graphic Medicine for Librarians #ALAAC24 Come on by and engage in some zine making as self care!
@heymrsbond @SarahMcInTexas He has a lot of great pieces students might resonate with in Inciting Joy. The one on school is 🔥. With the moral being school should be about making beautiful shit together not polishing units for “success”. Some spicy language but will inspire discussion and hope for change.
Feeling fortunate to have been at an education conference here. Heading home with renewed optimism for expanding what's possible in creating cultures of care for our students and the planet. Keep at it, educators! #etc2023kk
Enjoying @jenniferlagarde 's Bookelicious talk about graphic novels with Jerry Craft and Dan Santat even though I don't work with K-7 anymore. Graphic novels, comics, and illustrated books are great at every age! 📚❤️
@heymrsbond For real. My 13 year old was just told by his teacher that learning to annotate books was just something he has to accept, like cleaning the toilet. Way to get him excited about reading…🤦🏻♀️
My middle school son’s teacher told him that annotating books for school was just something he had to learn to do even if he doesn’t like it, like cleaning the toilet. 🤦🏻♀️ And we wonder why most kids stop reading for pleasure by high school. Can we stop killing the joy of reading?
@DebDeO@DisneyPlus My son & I rewatched that scene over & over & he couldn’t see why they would use that turn of phrase. I caught myself trying to explain intent like you instead of reckoning with the impact. Wanted Disney to know that it was taken this way by a child who has experienced that slur.
This will be my 12th year as a librarian and 17th as an educator and I still think of this ad every first day of school. Sadly, school hasn't changed much (except for more diversity, yay!). How can we make school a better experience for students? https://t.co/UgFcjGLwfE
@LenaGluck There was another well-attended session held by ALA’s Office of Intellectual Freedom in which librarians engaged in discussion on alternatives to neutrality rhetoric. To learn more and engage in real discussion on these nuanced convos check out https://t.co/UFOvxPkxwA.
@LenaGluck I was at that session and in no way did Jason Reynolds support that stance but humbly deferred to the librarians in the room on how to handle library matters. Nancy Pearl’s comments shocked many of us in the room, but I would not hold her words up as representing ALA’s agenda.
@MsThomBookitis @CaptainLibrary@AliSchilpp@staceybethr Me three!! So great to meet your rowdy irreverent crew! Can’t wait to hang with you all at our anniversary of meeting in Chicago! I owe you a drink, @CaptainLibrary !
Hope you’re feeling ready to fight the power today, brave librarians! Come to my session at 2:30 for ideas on how to bring our rage/wonder/love to our social justice work with youth. I’ll be giving these books away. Don’t miss it! https://t.co/GXxWKdIiOp #ALAAC22
