My 2yo will come to me and be with me the instant I cried. She will hold my face and even say “oh mommy, you ok?”. And yes, my child has seen me cry. Happy. Sad. She is so kind.
Empathy begins early.
Infants are surprisingly well attuned to the emotions of others. They study and react to their caregivers’ expressions. They cry when other babies cry.
But it’s during the second year that we really see children express empathy more fully and outwardly.
Watch this little guy as he notices a friend in distress - then takes action.
So lovely.

With six kids in the family, some might wonder how Katie Tarman has time to coach. But she's excelled, guiding the Papillion-La Vista South volleyball team to three state titles in four years. Congrats to The World Herald's Girls Coach of the Year.
