TSHEPO MAHLOELE BUYS FLYSAFAIR

Harith General Partners has agreed to buy full ownership of FlySafair, South Africa’s largest domestic airline, expanding its transport and infrastructure investments.

The deal, completed through Harith Aviation, follows a long shareholder exit process, although the price was not disclosed.

FlySafair controls about 67% of domestic seat capacity and operates a fleet of more than 30 aircraft, highlighting its strong market position.

The acquisition revives Harith’s ambition to own an airline after its failed South African Airways bid in 2024.

FlySafair’s management will remain in place, while the purchase is expected to align ownership with local aviation regulations and support future growth.

R240 MILLION PAYDAY FOR NASPERS CEO

In a striking financial maneuver underscoring both her strategic acumen and the complexities of executive compensation, Phuthi Mahanyele-Dabengwa, CEO of Naspers's South African operations, recently sold 42,305 shares valued at R239.6 million ($12.7 million).

The share options were part of incentive packages granted between 2020 and 2023. The sale, made on 30 July, was reportedly to settle taxes and related costs.

Despite cashing out, she retained 9,999 shares worth over R55-million.

Mahanyele-Dabengwa was appointed to the Naspers board in April 2025 (as an executive director) and will join the board of Prosus in August, should this be approved by shareholders at the group’s AGM later this month.

Her total pay last year was R44-million.

This move, part of Trump’s broader reciprocal tariff strategy dubbed "Liberation Day," aims to address perceived trade imbalances but threatens to disrupt South Africa’s economy significantly. The tariffs, effective immediately, jeopardize industries reliant on the U.S. market, including agriculture and manufacturing, which benefit from programs like the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).

South Africa’s citrus growers, a key export sector, are particularly vulnerable, with duty-free access to the U.S. now at risk.

Economists warn that the tariffs could wipe out thousands of jobs, potentially 211,000 in AGOA-related industries, while driving up living costs due to a weakened rand.

The South African government has called the move premature, urging dialogue to protect bilateral trade worth billions.
