The corn seedling’s sharp coleoptile point is pushed to the surface by the elongating mesocotyl. Once the coleoptile senses light it ruptures and releases the first leaf. If the top soil is cloddy light can hit it and make it rupture early. Pre-plant Irr will help prevent this.
