A9: I love the idea of future book club opportunities. Follow-up Twitter Chats provide everyone with a great platform to learn, share and grow together; allowing us to still participate even with busy after school schedules. 🤪 #LCSbookclub
A8: Have any of you had the opportunity to read other books similar to The Long Way Down or other works by @JasonReynolds83? If so, any suggestions? One that has always stuck with me through the years is Jonathan Kozol's Savage Inequalities. #LCSbookclub
A7: Yes, students deal with a number of tough choices on a daily basis. Thankfully, they are not always as severe as contemplating or carrying out a murder, but a student’s own survival is personal and real for them. #LCSbookclub
A6 I think Will believed by following Shawn and going through with the shooting that he would ultimately be choosing his own fate. “Continuing the circle” would forever connect him with the elevator guests in death. #LCSbookclub
A5: School has rules 4 Ss 2 follow; allowing them 2 solve problems thru restorative practice. Ss may not follow these @ home; losing chances 2 grow. Parents, due 2 influences beyond their control, complete Ss' tasks; fending off failure and making transitions tough. #LCSbookclub
A4: I am not familiar with “the rules” within which Will had to live. However, I did grow up with family rules, but they were about keeping us safe and healthy while honoring our faith. #LCSbookclub
A3: All of the elevator guests are impactful, but I believe Shawn is the most significant. WIll “needs” to avenge his brother’s death. For Will to see his brother, that he misses very deeply, tugs at his emotions. #LCSbookclub
A2: The Long Way Down reminded me that some students live in a constant state of survival mode. Violence and/or fear of violence is their round-the-clock reality. #LCSbookclub
A1: Hi! My name is Vickey Spinner and I teach Kindergarten Jump Start at Bowman Primary. I had an amazing summer and have had an excellent start to the school year. #LCSbookclub
A big thank you for the surprise sweet treat that the administrators at Bowman primary school gave to all of the staff today! Thank you so much-it was very thoughtful! A great way to start out December!
