🚨New paper released today:
10 Common SEN Mis(Interventions)—An Evidence Summary
https://t.co/8lQNH00Co4
Supporting students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) is a vital and growing challenge for schools. But it’s not straightforward. Learning is complex, marketing claims are confident, and the evidence is often hard to access. As a result, we can sometimes end up adopting approaches which are less effective than we initially think.
For some, this may well be uncomfortable reading. As a profession, many of us have put time, effort and belief into these things, and lots will have seen students who looked like they were getting something from it. However, it’s essential that we temper our intuition with evidence, because ultimately: our most vulnerable students deserve it.
This new paper co-authored with @Barker_J is an attempt to raise the visibility of the best available evidence around several commonly used SEN interventions. For each, we provide an overview of what the research says, offer a more informed approach, and provide a suite of rigorous links to help you get started.
We hope it will serve as a useful resource and over time: push us to be even more 'evidence demanding' as a profession.
As ever, let me know what you think. If you have pushes or suggestions for how this paper could be better, hit reply and give it to me straight.

"Polling" before you Cold Call students can make the technique feel even more natural and conversational.
Here's what that looks like:

Scrapping School Sports funding will be disastrous for school sports. We use it to fund inter-school sports, extra swimming (we’re coastal)
This s will reduce opportunities for primary children. There is no money to cover this gap. Budgets already threadbare.
We don’t have a classroom management problem.
We have an emotional regulation crisis that teachers are being asked to handle.
Somehow, “classroom management” has turned into:
• de-escalating trauma
• supporting anxiety and depression
• calming panic attacks
• breaking up fights
• being cursed at, threatened, and even assaulted
• being the counselor, social worker, and crisis team
And at the same time…
we remove the very things that actually help:
• recess
• movement
• art
• play
• connection
Teachers aren’t trained for this.
And they shouldn’t have to be.
Classroom management was never meant to do all of this.
It’s about:
relationships
rules
routines
responsibility
That’s it.
It was never designed to replace what families, communities, and systems failed to provide.
And until we stop offloading every societal failure onto schools,
teachers will keep drowning under expectations no human can meet.
A country that has nuclear weapons is threatening to use its nuclear weapons on the country it won’t allow to have nuclear weapons because if they had nuclear weapons they would ‘use them.’
I’m sorry but the future belongs to those who read widely, who are able to write without the assistance of a machine, who haven’t allowed endless slop to kill their curiosity and cognitive abilities. Excess tech is going to melt many brains. Yours doesn’t need to be one of them.
please get a library card even if you won’t use it because cities will look at library statistics and use that to decide to keep libraries open and properly funded
A reminder for all Muslim leaders across the globe.
“The destruction of the Kaaba, stone by stone, would be lighter with Allah than the shedding of the blood of a believer.”
Your behaviour is shameful.
Imagine telling the world that you're liberating the women of Iran and one of the first things you do is blow up a school full of girls. Extraordinary.
