Today I spoke to @YourMorning + @metromorning about why kids today have fewer math skills than they did in 2003. Not on the list: “because we need to go back to teaching math the old way.”🙄 Here’s a 3 min summary of what I said: #edutwitter#OECDPISA

“My biggest piece of advice is: treat students like the human beings that they are! Often when students walk into our classrooms, we expect them to ditch their identity at the door & put on this one-dimensional “student hat”… #mtbos#Math@maanow

We have to stop making learning about marks/grades. It diminishes learning to eventually being transactional for all students. We don't grade for them. We grade because we like. Let's be honest. @HumResPro

"But late work is inconvenient."
Yep.
Teaching is inconvenient.
And it always will be.
We work with humans.
Humans, even the adult ones, are inconvenient creatures.
Accepting that changed the whole game for me--and my kids.
Learning with humans is a messy inconvenience.
Working toward equity is not about figuring out ways to help specific groups beat the odds. It’s an acknowledgment of the odds, a new vision, reallocation, and the intentional pursuit of justice for all.

If you want to hear me gab about that for an hour, join me on May 10. Thanks @LDatSchool for the soapbox.

I’ve never been attached to the word “ungrading.” It has had rhetorical purpose, sparking conversations about the exact things that some find troubling about the word.
Some thoughts about the problem of the word “ungrading” from my recent post. https://t.co/wtQjMAGHn2
