What a gorgeous email π₯° This student arrived in the UK in October 2023 having not been taught a British-based education yet alone any GCSE content before and yet he achieved a 5 in both English Language and Literature! A great reminder of why I love teaching.

Lots of the time, character will fall into 3 groups:
- role models
- warnings
- plot devices.
Teaching students which of these they are can be really helpful when moving students to understanding that texts are constructsβ¦
If you want an intro lesson on Child Language Acquisition you could try something I did this week.
Watch some clips of babies (links below) and ask sts to note down ideas in response to the qu: How are these babies communicating?

Some of these students were a couple of marks away from the next grade boundary, which is so sad given that was due to error on the examinerβs part (not a criticism as I can appreciate that in many cases it was just human error)
