Voters are receiving so many political texts, calls and mailers that some are reconsidering ever donating to a campaign again
โI must get at least 10-20 texts A DAY from literally every single candidate in the country," a voter said " https://t.co/vnrh7HHquU
Absolutely. I stopped donating to campaigns over it. It really feels like harassment. Not even debt collectors have been as aggressive as campaigns asking for money.
A new book says Dutch spies spent months watching Jared Kushner's iPhone screen in real time, and one of the things they saw him open was a bank account with about $750 million in it.
They got in because the Russians had already hacked the phone, and the Dutch found a way to ride along.
Here's how it went down, according to Matthew Cole's reporting in Vanity Fair. In late 2017, Dutch military intelligence found out a Russian GRU officer was about to travel to the UK. The guy was a dark-web hacker who dealt in stolen bank data. The Dutch gave him two options, work for them or get picked up by the British, and he picked the Dutch. He then handed over access to a GRU server in Rostov, and sitting on that server were screenshots from Kushner's iPhone X. So Russian military intelligence was already inside the phone of the man running America's Middle East policy.
From there, Dutch hackers in The Hague figured out how the Russians pulled it off and built their own way in. Cole says they could see his screen whenever he was using it, and they saved every frame. Sound was the one thing they couldn't get.
Think about what that means for anyone who uses WhatsApp or Signal. The encryption does its job while a message is flying between two phones. Once it pops up on a hacked screen, whoever's watching just reads it right along with you.
End-to-end encryption stops at your screen.
That's relevant here, because back in 2019 the head of House Oversight said Kushner's own lawyer had confirmed he used WhatsApp for official White House business and kept records by screenshotting his chats. The lawyer pushed back on parts of that account.
The Dutch have pulled this kind of thing on Russia before. In 2014, their spies got inside the network of Cozy Bear, the Russian hacking crew later tied to the DNC hack. They even took over the security camera in the hallway outside the hackers' office near Red Square and had photos of everybody walking in and out. When Cozy Bear went after the State Department that November, the Dutch tipped off Washington, and the Americans reportedly sent them cake and flowers as a thank-you.
As for the money, Cole alleges the Saudi and Emirati rulers put at least $2 billion into accounts tied to Kushner during Trump's first term. Kushner says every word is false and that the author never produced a single bank record. His lawyer is threatening to sue. The full book comes out October 27, so we're about to find out who has the receipts.
If Cole's sources hold up, there's a hard drive somewhere in The Hague with a frame-by-frame replay of the most sensitive phone in Trump's first White House.
Iโm sorry, but hackers remotely turning off refrigeration systems at hundreds of supermarkets and destroying all their fresh and frozen food is INSANE. Weโve connected so much of our physical world to the internet that apparently even keeping milk cold is now a cybersecurity problem. What the actual hell.
The first Black woman to produce programmes for the BBC was a Jamaican poet who arrived in London in 1932 and could not find anyone who would rent her a room.
She ended up running the radio programme that launched Caribbean literature.
Then she had a breakdown and was put on a ship home.
Una Marson. She was already an editor and playwright in Jamaica when she came to Britain.
She documented the experience of looking for lodgings in a city where the signs said no coloureds, and wrote a poem about it called "Nigger" that is still hard to read.
She worked for the League of Coloured Peoples, then for Haile Selassie when he was in exile in London after the Italian invasion of Ethiopia, and sat behind him at the League of Nations.
In 1941 the BBC took her on.
By 1942 she was producing "Calling the West Indies," which began as a programme reading servicemen's messages home and which she turned into "Caribbean Voices" โ the programme that broadcast and paid a generation of Caribbean writers including Derek Walcott, V.S. Naipaul, Samuel Selvon and George Lamming.
It is not an exaggeration to say modern Caribbean literature was partly built in that studio.
She was the only Black woman in the building, in wartime, producing for an organisation that was not always sure it wanted her there, and the strain was enormous.
She had a breakdown in 1945 and returned to Jamaica.
She kept working โ journalism, publishing, social work โ and died in 1965 at fifty-nine, largely forgotten in Britain until scholars rediscovered her in the 1990s.
She gave the Caribbean its literary voice from inside Broadcasting House and went home on a ship with a nervous collapse.

If you came of age during the golden era of hip-hop, R&B, & grunge in the โ90s and early 2000s, you may remember Res (@the1res), born Shareese Renรฉe Ballard. These days, a lot of Gen Z is getting to know her, too.

My uncle noticed his monthly water and sewage bill jumped from $85 to $290 over the last six months, even though his family didn't fill a single pool or leak a gallon.
He called the municipal water board to report what he assumed was a meter error.
The clerk explained that the city sold the local water treatment facility and underground main grid to an infrastructure equity fund last year to cover municipal budget deficits.
When my uncle asked why that tripled his rate, she told him:
"The private operator added a quarterly 'grid modernization surcharge' and an 'infrastructure maintenance access fee' to every residential account."
Nothing about the pipes, pressure, or water quality improved.
Private equity isn't just buying houses and daycares anymore.
They are acquiring local utility monopolies so they can bill working families a mandatory tax on drinking water and flushing the toilet.
to go deeper โ all art is political. Itโs either upholding power structures or critiquing them.
So to be a storyteller who proclaims themselves outside politics is a storyteller upholding and assuaging the powers that be. Full stop. No other option.
