@CHuxsoll @DrPorcher I love your ideas! As educators, we can facilitate and comfortable learning environment by accepting students natural vernaculars. With this we can help them find their own unique voice. #teacheredumatters
@bluehenraye @DrPorcher Yes! I feel as that we are conditioned with these racist biases that we need to spend the rest of our life breaking. However, I do hope for future generations that they will be conditioned to listen, love, accept, an understand one another without boundaries #teacheredumatters
@DrPorcher Encourage color and culture in the classroom!! The more exposure to blackness will naturally create a new norm as well as new standards for the classroom and beyond. #teacheredumatters
@mschloecastro @DrPorcher I had the same epiphany Chloe! I never knew that my mother tongue has been reshaped and reconstructed due to Anti-blackness behaviors. #teacheredumatters
@msjade1010 @DrPorcher I agree that so many POC are beaten down and discouraged at a young age. However there is now justified reason as to why they experience these factors. Unfortunately, these feelings are toxic to their growth and creates a negative cycle. #teacheredumatters
@DrPorcher Unfortunately, when you look into the authors that have written a lot of a our class materials (not including ENGL 294), it is written by people who are not from the AA community. Therefore circulating more “mainstream” ideas rather than new and rich ones. #teacheredumatters
ENGL 294: I would subtract the words “should”. This term is definite and doesn’t allow for the abstract qualities grammar possesses. #teacheredumatters
@SofiaEdri @DrPorcher I agree!! I also know that when people come from different countries their phrases can translate in various different ways. We should not attack people who also make an educated effort to speak the mainstream English. #teacheredumatters
@emmaclarkud @DrPorcher I love hearing your ideas of a less oppressive environment. It would be great to have a place where ideas are not restricted and can build off of each other without prejudice. #teacheredumatters
@DrPorcher To be linguistically free would be a world without an added layer of stress. People would most likely be able to more confident in themselves and their ideas. More perspectives of the world would be revealed because there wouldn’t be a linguistic barrier. #teacheredumatters
@DrPorcher If we accept peoples diverse backgrounds as a component of their everyday vernacular then we can stray away from the harm labeling causes. #teacheredumatters
@DrPorcher Yet, sometimes they can be accused of talking like a “black person” or like a “white person”. However, the way they choose to speak is not because of their race but the community and experiences that they grew up in. #teacheredumatters
@DrPorcher My mother tongue is English however with DMV twang. I often use words such as “bop”, “hoco, moco, boco”, “hip”, “gas”, “boolin”, and “my slime”. These slang words are often used in an informal setting because they are combinations of shortened phrases. #teacheredumatters
@DrPorcher Hi all! My name is Virginia Henderson and I am an Elementary Teacher Education Major with a concentration in Special Education. I look forward to hearing everyone’s ideas!
@mschloecastro I also agree that there is a time and place for certain grammar. The only people that can set the tone for the grammar used are the people having the conversation. However, social norms can have more power over this factor.
