My heart goes out to everyone evacuating Northwest Ontario due to the wildfires. We need a preparedness plan that funds and supports wildland firefighters before there's an emergency, not after the fire's already putting lives at risk.

If you stepped outside today, that haze you're breathing is wildfire smoke. But the real story is up north, where it's coming from. Whole communities evacuated. Families fleeing by boat. Collins First Nation burned to the ground. For most of us, it'll clear in a few days. For the people up north... it's their homes. Their communities. Their lives. And it didn't have to be this way. It's the result of choices made by governments that keep looking away.

The wildfire situation has escalated significantly over the last three weeks across the country, and particularly in Northwestern Ontario. 

Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate their communities, not knowing if their homes will survive.  

On behalf of Canadians, I want to thank the brave firefighters, first responders, Indigenous and local leaders who are working tirelessly to keep people safe.

Our government is in close contact with provincial, municipal, and Indigenous partners and stands ready to provide any additional support as needed.
