Nigeria is far too poor for the level of classism, arrogance and social superiority we display on this app.
Sometimes, the way some Nigerians look down on cleaners, security guards, drivers, and domestic workers abroad, you’d think the minimum wage in Nigeria is ₦5M.
Meanwhile, a huge percentage of the population struggles to earn even ₦200K monthly.
Let me give you a practical example. 👇🏽👇🏽
Go to SPAR, BILLA or HOFER here in Austria 🇦🇹. You’ll find cleaners, cashiers and store attendants who drive themselves to work. Some can afford holidays twice a year, live independently and enjoy a decent standard of living.
Yet, in Nigeria, many corporate 9-5 workers who wear suits, carry laptops and hold impressive job titles cannot comfortably afford a one-week holiday in Kenya 🇰🇪.
Our classism is sometimes bigger than our pockets.
I met a litre of fuel at ₦65.
I met Coke at ₦35.
I met egg at ₦15.
I met a bag of rice at ₦8,500.
I met bread at ₦10.
I met corned beef at ₦280.
I met a bag of cement at ₦750.
I met pure water at 2 sachets for ₦5.
Sometimes, I wonder how we went from here to where we are today.
But here’s the bigger question: Were Nigerians genuinely better off financially back then, or were things simply cheaper because the value of money was different?
For those of you who are working towards JAPA using the study route, Let me share a few realities you need to understand before making that move. 🧵👇🏽
1. A STUDENT VISA IS NOT A CITIZENSHIP VISA: Its main and primary purpose of issuance is for you to come to the country and STUDY. Every other thing is secondary.
2. YOUR LEGAL STAY IS TIED TO YOUR STUDENT STATUS: You must understand that while on a study visa, your stay in that country is dependent on your staying in school. Of course you will have the opportunity to transition later on.
In countries like Austria, maintaining your student residence status comes with obligations, including meeting academic requirements.
3. Don’t JAPA and abandon school to face “hustle” squarely: I understand that bills need to be paid. I understand that survival abroad is not beans. But don’t get so carried away with making money.
You must find a balance between school, work, and enjoyment.
4. Be ready to READ!!! “School is easy abroad” na when you come you go know. Nobody is coming to drag you through your degree. You must be disciplined enough to put in the work.
Again, JAPA in itself is not an achievement but a strategy. ✌🏾✌🏾✌🏾
The person who makes you feel safest may not be the person who gives you the biggest rush. Sometimes peace feels boring when your nervous system is accustomed to chaos.
@RayGoodison@BustyDara We don't see the hate. It comes later on when one is probably in love with them and would move mountains for them. Then you gradually see the disrespect and the hate. Imagine him and his boys giving you a nickname as an inside joke among them. Lol
