In this week's New England Journal of Medicine, two doctors openly brag about helping immigrants avoid ICE.

Their names are Munira Maalimisaq, F.N.P., P.H.N., and Jennifer Needle-Suarez, M.D., M.P.H., M.P.A

In the first week of December 2025, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security launched Operation Metro Surge (OMS), deploying more than 3000 federal agents to Minneapolis in the largest immigration-enforcement operation in U.S. history.

Here is how these doctors responded, in their own words:

"Two days into OMS, a community clinic in South Minneapolis, which one of us leads, suspended routine operations and reorganized around home-based and community-embedded care delivery. The logic was uncomplicated: patients were too afraid to come to us, so we should go to them.

Within days, more than 100 volunteer physicians, nurses, midwives, interpreters, social workers, behavioral health clinicians, trainees, and community health workers had organized using encrypted messaging platforms, often without institutional authorization."

Aiding and abetting the evasion of US immigration laws is a felony, as it should be. Let's enforce it.

It's time to start making examples.

Peggy Flanagan has been part of the state’s leadership during these failures. Now that she’s running for U.S. Senate, she can’t simply walk away from that record.
