Amupitan and the Credibility of the 2027 Elections:
By Salihu Tanko Yakasai
In any election, the most important stakeholder is the electoral umpire. Whoever is chosen to lead the electoral body carries a heavy burden, particularly in how key players and observers perceive the independence of that umpire, whether he will be fair and just or take sides with those who appointed him.
Typically, the person appointed to head the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is expected to ensure a level playing field for all candidates, irrespective of whether they belong to the ruling party or the opposition. Over the years in Nigeria, however, some INEC chairmen have been found wanting in the discharge of their duties.
Maurice Iwu is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most controversial INEC chairmen, largely because the 2007 elections under his leadership were heavily criticized for irregularities and lack of credibility. Even Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, who won that election, admitted the process was flawed. While some argue he operated within a weak system, his tenure is still often seen as a low point for electoral integrity in Nigeria.
If you’re looking at credibility, transparency, and public trust, his tenure is often seen as a low point for Nigeria’s electoral process.
But from all indications, the current INEC chairman, Joash Amupitan, seems to be on the verge of becoming even worse than Maurice Iwu, as his tenure has been marked by one controversy after another since his appointment.
1- Religious bias allegation
The current INEC chairman, Amupitan, has faced criticism over a past petition in which he reportedly raised concerns about what he described as “Christian genocide.” This has drawn objections from groups such as the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, who argue that such a position raises questions about his neutrality in a religiously diverse country and have called for his removal.
2- ADC leadership portal controversy
While citing a court order, the INEC chairman reportedly derecognized David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola as Chairman and Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, respectively. This removal from INEC’s official portal could undermine the party’s ability to field candidates. Critics see this as a move that may disadvantage opposition parties in favor of the ruling All Progressives Congress.
3- Voter revalidation exercise concerns
Another major issue was the proposed voter revalidation exercise, which was introduced close to the election timeline, which sparked backlash. Many argued that attempting to revalidate tens of millions of voters within a short period could disenfranchise many Nigerians in the 2027 general elections. Following public pressure, the commission suspended the exercise.
4- Social media partisanship allegation
Questions have been raised about an alleged social media account linked to Amupitan, which contain posts supportive of the APC, and are critical of opposition movements such as the “Obidient” movement. Although he denied ownership, some online claims suggest links to personal identifiers such as an email address and phone number, leaving the issue contested.
All these controversies are happening even before the elections. If Maurice Iwu is the yardstick for a poor election umpire, then by all accounts, Amupitan appears to be on track to surpass that record. If he can be perceived as this compromised before the elections, what should be expected on election day?
When the credibility of an election collapses, the consequences go far beyond the ballot box. Voter turnout drops as people begin to feel their votes no longer count, and the legitimacy of whoever emerges as the winner is immediately questioned. This often fuels political tension, deepens divisions, and in some cases can trigger unrest. Ultimately, a flawed electoral process does not just produce disputed outcomes. It weakens public trust in democracy itself and makes governance far more difficult. 1/2

ADC YOUTH WING ISSUES 3DAYS ULTIMATUM TO INEC: RESTORE DEMOCRACY OR FACE NATIONWIDE CIVIC ACTION
FULL TEXT OF PRESS CONFERENCE BY THE YOUTH WING OF THE AFRICAN DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS ADC, AT THE NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS,FCT ABUJA.
Date: Monday 6th April, 2026
Gentlemen of the Press, Fellow Nigerian Youths, Distinguished Citizens,
Nigeria is under democratic siege.
What should have been a steady consolidation of 27 uninterrupted years of civil rule since 1999 is now being deliberately undermined by those entrusted to protect it.
Institutions meant to defend the will of the people are now being compromised, weakened, and weaponized against democracy itself.
Let us be clear, this is not a warning, this is a crisis.
As Mallam Aminu Kano once warned,
“The democratic humanism of the future can only be built on the ruins of the present corrupt and decaying system.”
Today, that decay is no longer hidden.
It is active, deliberate and also dangerous.
On July 29, 2025, the African Democratic Congress held a lawful NEC meeting under the full supervision of INEC.
That meeting dissolved the previous National Working Committee (NWC), produced a new leadership led by Senator David Mark.
INEC received the outcome, verified the process, officially uploaded and recognized this leadership on September 9, 2025
There was: No dispute. No objection. No ambiguity.
So, what changed?
Power, Pressure and Political interference.
Months later, individuals who had already resigned resurfaced to challenge a process they had no legal standing in.
While the matter remains before the courts, the Court of Appeal ordered, Maintain status quo ante bellum, the last uncontested position.
That position is clear, The leadership under Senator David Mark.
Yet INEC chose to ignore established facts, disregard due process and unlawfully interpret a court order.
Let it be stated unequivocally: INEC has no constitutional authority to interpret court orders. That duty belongs strictly to the courts. What INEC has done is not neutrality. It is complicity, partisanship and institutional sabotage.
We ask the INEC Chairman directly:
On what legal basis did INEC act on letters and an ex parte motion that has neither been heard nor determined by a court of competent jurisdiction?
Why did INEC Act on pending motions?
Rely on letters instead of binding court orders?
Assume the powers of the Judiciary?
This is not a mistake, but a violation of the Constitution.
We respectfully call on the National Assembly to Exercise their constitutional oversight immediately, Investigate this grave breach, initiate appropriate actions, including the recall or removal of the INEC Chairman because time is of essence. Democracy must be defended with action, not silence.
We urge the Judiciary to Clarify its orders to prevent manipulation, reassert its authority as the sole interpreter of the law, protect the integrity of Nigeria's legal system
We commend the Armed Forces for defending Nigeria. However, we state clearly, the military must remain neutral and stay away from civic democratic actions.
This is a civil and constitutional matter. Nigeria must not witness any attempt to use force against lawful democratic expression.
To over 100 million youths of our dear Country, this is about our future, our voice, our democracy. We must not defend injustice nor normalize illegality.
Together, let's stand now to defend our democracy or lose everything democracy represents.
Out Position is very clear; The leadership inaugurated on July 29, 2025, led by Senator David Mark, remains the only legitimate leadership of the ADC.
Any attempt to alter this without a final court judgment is illegal, null, void and unacceptable.
We hereby issue a 3DAYS ULTIMATUM TO INEC to:
Immediately restore the Senator David Mark-led leadership on its official portal.
Publicly apologize to Nigerians for its unconstitutional and partisan conduct.
BREAKING: ADC releases Video where Nafiu Bala was sighted at David Mark Leadership Unveiling after he tendered his resignation.
The @inecnigeria representatives where also present at the Event.
The new video exposed Nafiu Bala's attendance at the ADC unveiling ceremony of David Mark-led leadership held in Abuja, July 2025.

I am a 31-year-old single mother with a 6-year-old child. My husband divorced me early in the marriage and never took responsibility for our child. I have struggled but Alhamdulillah built a stable life. I chose not to remarry because most proposals required me to leave my child, which I cannot accept. However, for the past 1–2 years, I feel extremely lonely and emotionally drained. At times I crave companionship and intimacy, yet I don’t want to remarry or enter any relationship. I turn to Allah, cry, and make dua, but I still feel this emptiness. What should I do?
