Have you gone through the Finance Bill 2026?
If not, this is your sign to pay attention, because what’s inside it directly touches how you earn, spend, create, and even stay connected in a #digitaleconomy.
Under the #Sheriayavijana project, we convened several youths from Nairobi County, reviewed the Bill and are preparing a memorandum to Parliament raising key concerns affecting #youngpeople, workers, and small businesses.
As much as we acknowledge some positive steps in a few areas, there are still serious concerns that need public attention and review.
Here are some of the key proposals we have flagged for closer scrutiny:
➡️ A 5% withholding tax on income from digital content creation, which directly affects creators, freelancers, and online entrepreneurs.
➡️ A 25% excise duty on mobile phones, a move that could push device prices higher and widen the digital divide.
➡️ A proposed 16% VAT on digital financial transactions, including payments made via M-PESA and cards, which were previously exempt.
➡️ A new 5% levy on imported mitumba, which could impact livelihoods in the second-hand clothing trade while raising broader questions on affordability and sustainability.
➡️ An increase in residential rental income tax from 7.5% to 10%, with possible ripple effects on housing costs.
These are just but a few, but at the end of the day, the direction of this Bill will be measured not in policy language but in how it reshapes everyday survival, especially for young people and small businesses.
And that’s exactly why this conversation cannot be left to Parliament alone.
