If one takes a comprehensive view of taxation in the US, here’s the picture that emerges:
All social groups pay broadly the same effective tax rate today – around 25%-30% of income, all taxes included – with billionaires having the lowest tax rate: 24% on average in 2018–20.

Niemand redet /2
In 2024, more than 60% of new cars sold in Ethiopia were fully electric.
That’s not a typo.
Ethiopia is one of the world’s least motorised countries. It now ranks alongside global EV leaders by share of new car sales. Ahead of most of Europe.
Very interesting new study finding that *even in large European cities*, in most places it is easier to access opportunities by car than by public transport https://t.co/YzQbrtfR0i
The exceptions are Paris, Zurich and the innermost parts of Milan and Barcelona
The mass replication studies published in Nature today are insane, exemplary and an enormous pile of work to improve science.
It's just so awesome how many people spent time on this in return to be 1/100 coauthors on a thing.
Just outstanding 🙌🙌🙌 1/

The French are not lazy. They just enjoy leisure more than most (no irony here) And this is perfectly fine: .
As productivity increases, it is perfectly reasonable to take it partly as more leisure (fewer hours per week, earlier retirement age), and only partly in income.
"The US is strong, Europe is weak"
You hear it everywhere: in the US national defense strategy, in speeches by Trump, Bessent, Lutnick, etc., in Davos this week.
You hear it everywhere but it's a myth.
The US has not grown faster than Europe since 2010, not by one iota. 🧵

🚨BREAKING: ICE/Border Patrol agents were filmed assaulting U.S. citizens outside a HIGH SCHOOL in Minneapolis, pepper-spraying students as agents swarmed the school entrance.
Let that sink in.
School administrators and staff desperately tried to get agents off school property, while ushering students away from armed federal agents.
Chaos. Panic. Children running for safety.
And yes… agents pepper-sprayed STUDENTS.
This didn’t happen by accident.
This happened because the Trump administration stripped schools of their “sensitive location” protections, opening the door for ICE and Border Patrol to operate on school grounds.
In plain terms:
The federal government intentionally removed protections that once kept armed agents away from children, and now we are watching the predictable result… kids being assaulted with chemical weapons at school.
Outside a high school.
In broad daylight.
On U.S. soil.
This is not “border security.”
This is state violence.
And it’s being unleashed on children.
New post!
There was a lot of innovation in medicine and biomedical research this year, and I've tried to summarize the biggest ones in this blogpost.
