When Shaykh Nuh’s “Reliance of the Traveler”—a translation of the Shafi’i fiqh manual Umdat Al Salik— was first translated back in the early 90s, there was a conversation whether Fiqh being translated into English was a good idea because now bad faith actors can use some rulings such as “woman’s mood does not count when a husband wants intercourse” for example, and use that to say “oh look marital rape in Islam!”

I am happy it was translated because it was a great work. But I also see the other point.

While projects like these look promising (in fact its pretty impressive tool from my initial use) it mostly helps the following crowd:

a) people who are malicious and want to find texts to that end.
b) Orientalists/ and some Muslim researchers who want to find texts easily so they can finish their Qatar funded projects, so they can quickly apply for the next project.
c) amateur apologists among the Muslims who want to find a particular text on this group or that to
score points.

Common person has little need or understanding of how to use such a platform. And serious Muslim researcher doing important works rarely need these tools. They have already developed the skills where to look.

So the question is, who is the audience in mind for this project?

I am generally of the view that let people toll for what they really want. Don’t give anything on a platter to anyone.

Zaid ibn Haritha RA was a pious sahabi, Zainab bint Jahsh RA was a pious sahabiyah.
