Guess who the minister found on duty at 1am?
Medical Interns. The very people @GovUganda, @MinofHealthUG et al don't want to support with an allowance.
Oh Uganda may God uphold thee!
Should Medical interns be fighting for allowances just to continue saving the lives of the common man while being initiated into independent medical practice?
The talk today is about Ebola, yet in actual sense these same interns are receiving patients who have not even been screened, risking their own lives in the process. This shouldn’t have been a topic of discussion in a country that prioritizes health
Dr. Chris Baryomusi said that the government is going to provide lunch to medical interns.
Well, it's good that they now recognize that interns deserve something. However, medical interns need more than lunch.
They need:
1. Breakfast
2. Lunch (which is being provided)
3. Dinner
4. Transport
5. Airtime
6. Clothes
7. Rent
8. General upkeep, among other necessities.
They are not slaves. They need money to survive, support their families, send some to their girlfriends, and occasionally unwind and forget the stress of hospital work with a bottle of whiskey.
Give them money. #PayAllMedicalInterns
Hon. Chris Baryomunsi has cleared the air on reports that the government has scrapped medical interns’ allowances, saying the allowances have not been fully removed as widely reported.
“The students who are on government sponsorship, like those at Makerere, Mbarara, Gulu, and Kabale universities, will proceed with their internships with full support from the government.”
The public sees medical interns as young medics serving patients; government sees them as free labour to be deployed, mercilessly used and thereafter dumped in a jobless market.

Five years of hard work, sacrifice, and growth culminated in a memorable Finalists’ Dinner. As one journey comes to an end and another begins, we celebrate a victory well earned even amid the shadows cast by the internship policy. The future remains ours to shape. 🩺🧑⚕️ @MakMedics
