It is an essential question since it deals with prohibited or lawful dealings and earnings.
Firstly, digital marketing is undoubtedly among the newest means of earning today. Many celebrities get more through it than their earnings through their profession. Two months ago, I read that Christiano Ronaldo (a Portuguese footballer with Al-Nassr football club in Saudi Arabia) earns $ 3.23 million through a single post on Instagram. Just a single post. Yes, only one post.
Secondly, so far, I have never participated in the X (formerly Twitter) type of marketing or content development through premium subscriptions. As a result, I can only depend on your explanation, and I hope it is elaborate.
Thirdly, in Islam, what is being considered as a foundation for legitimate business or otherwise is the fundamentals of the business, not its peripheral. The Glorious Qur'an speaks on legitimate business and illegitimate transactions in Suratul Baqarah, Verse 274.
Fourthly, content development in this context is the fundamental of the earnings, and it can be among the businesses that are commended by the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him). The beloved Prophet (PBUH) was asked what kind of earning is best? He said: “For a man to work with his hands and every honest transaction.” (Reported by Ahmad, Hadith No. 17265 and authenticated by His Eminence Al-Albani in Sahihut-Targhib , Hadith No. 1691)
Fifthly, the advertisement that comes up from time to time is the peripheral here, not central or fundamental. In addition, the advertisement could be for halal or unlawful activities. If it is for a halal, then it is very clear. However, if it is for unlawful activities, then the content developer could try to avoid the aspect or minimise where possible. As stated in the Glorious Qur'an:
Help you one another in righteousness and piety; but do not help one another in sin and transgression.” (Al-Maidah:2)
Unfortunately, if it is beyond him as a peripheral, then the most popular view of the scholars is that it will not render the whole activities to become prohibited as it is not at the centre of it. This is the opinion of Shaykh Bn Uthaymeen, among many others.
Hope this summary is sufficient, as I am currently super busy with my trade, too. Smile!
Indeed, Allah is the All-Knowing!
