H.E. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, Minister of Foreign Affairs Iruthisham Adam, and H.E. Ambassador Kong Xianhua of the People’s Republic of China visited the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge today to mark its 8th anniversary. Inaugurated on 30 August 2018, the bridge stands as a lasting symbol of the enduring partnership between the Maldives and China.

The President was accompanied by the Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, other Cabinet Ministers, the High Commissioner of India, Mr. G. Balasubramanian, senior representatives of AFCONS and Arup Group, and Government officials.

Eight years ago today, the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge opened. I had the privilege of serving on that project from its earliest days — the feasibility studies, the surveys, the design reviews, and construction. I remember the doubts, and the mockery of those who said it could not be done. It was built. Ahead of schedule, and within budget — a testament to the dedication and professionalism of the engineers who delivered it. The difference between "impossible" and "done" is engineering. That is why this date was chosen as National Engineers' Day: to honour not a single structure, but a profession our nation's future depends on. To every engineer serving this nation — happy National Engineers' Day.
