Should Nigerian universities invest more intentionally in their alumni networks?

I believe we sometimes underestimate what a strong alumni network can do for students and institutions. A university’s relationship with its graduates should not end at convocation.

Imagine if universities intentionally created systems where alumni could:

• Mentor current students and recent graduates.
• Connect students to internships and job opportunities.
• Make introductions within their professional networks.
• Provide practical career guidance based on their industries.
• Support scholarships, research, infrastructure, and student initiatives.
• Collaborate with faculty and students on research and innovation.
• Create pathways for students to access opportunities locally and internationally.

Some alumni may not have millions to donate to their alma mater, but they may have something equally valuable: access.

Someone can connect a student to an internship.

Someone can review a CV.

Someone can introduce a young researcher to a professor.

Someone can tell students about an opportunity they would otherwise never hear about.

Someone can return to campus and explain what they wish they had known before graduating.

Sometimes, one introduction can alter the trajectory of a young person’s career.

We need to broaden how we think about alumni engagement in Nigerian universities: beyond fundraising, as an integral part of the student development ecosystem.

Graduation should not mean the end of a university community. It could mean that a student moves from being a beneficiary of that community to becoming someone who helps strengthen it for those coming behind.

If you could redesign alumni engagement in Nigerian universities, what is ONE thing you would introduce?
