Sentencing | four-month prison term, suspended for 12 months; 100 hours of unpaid work. A FIVE-year ban on keeping animals.
Hansford left Staffy Rocky alone in her property on Junction Road, Southampton, after she moved in with a new boyfriend.
The court heard she saw Rocky the day after he died - December 17, 2022 - but left him there to rot.
Eventually a dog warden found Rocky’s emaciated body surrounded by his own faeces.
A statement from an expert vet witness said: “In the kitchen area there were hundreds of faeces deposits.
“There were also a number of household items on the floor along with a deceased male brindle-and-white Staffordshire bull terrier-type dog. The dog was wearing a slack collar and the bony prominences were easily observed.”
The court heard that Rocky had died from starvation and dehydration. He weighed less than 7kg.
The vet’s statement explained the amount of faeces in the kitchen was consistent with Rocky having had access to food and water on a regular basis for a prolonged period.
It added: “However, at some point this must have stopped, and a lack of access to food caused Rocky to lose weight and arrive at an emaciated bodily condition.
“More importantly, at some point in time Rocky’s access to water must have also stopped, resulting in dehydration and death.
“In addition, Rocky would have been spending long periods of time in social isolation. As a social species, this would have affected the mental health of this animal.”
Hansford pleaded guilty to two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal between 7th August 2022 and 7th December 2022.

Does anyone recognise this poor senior citizen?
This husky was found yesterday (14/04/24) near #'Walterstone in Herefordshire.
Sadly, incredibly underweight weighing under 10kg.
Microchip not up to date, registered keeper not contactable.
Known as ‘Arctic’ at some point in his life according to his microchip.
If anyone has any information please contact us on 07751549770 or private message us.
Proof of ownership will be required.
In the best possible way, we are hoping that perhaps this lovely boy has been fending for himself for a while, rather than purposely neglected.
UPDATE....
'Archie’ is improving every single day.
We have laughed with him and cried with him, a poor soul who did not deserve what has happened to him.
Found collapsed in a hedge on the Hereford/ Welsh border last weekend, his weak cries were miraculously heard by two wonderful ladies who were out walking, they pulled him out of the hedgerow, carried him back to their car and drove him to the vets for help.
There is no doubt that these ladies saved his life that day, this poor 10 year old husky weighed under 10kg and would have never have been able to walk to find himself help.
Archie was skin and bones covered in matted, greasy fur, a very sorry state that no animal should ever have to be in.
On arrival to HWAR earlier this week we were horrified to see and feel how badly emaciated he was, absolutely no muscle and as light as a feather. (Photos really don’t show just how bad his body condition was/is).
The journey to recovery began immediately, we started him off with very small meals every two hours to help Archie’s tummy adapt to receiving food once again, his weak legs could barely hold him at times but he hadn’t quite given in! With every meal he’s growing in strength and stability.
We gave Archie a few days to decompress and settle before we tackled his thick, stained & matted coat, unfortunately on welfare grounds it was kinder to shave mainly the trunk of his body (yes, we know you aren’t supposed to shave a husky!) leaving him with a questionable, daft hairstyle, he now resembles a baby alpaca! 😍
Followed by a soapy bath, Archie instantly seemed relieved and his cheeky little character started to appear.
Obviously, he will do ANYTHING for food but for now his small regular meals remain but it’s incredible to see his determination and sheer fight to survive this far.
Archie has also had a thorough check up at our vets, the great news is he has a good heart, he’s anaemic which isn’t surprising considering his condition but we will take each day as it comes and see how he progresses with regular check ups and weigh ins to monitor his weight gain.
Within 48 hours of arriving Archie had gained over 1/2 a kg so we’re hopeful that there’s no underlying condition at the root of his horrendous weight loss.
Now, the fantastic news is he has settled into his wonderful foster home with his foster dog siblings…💙🎉
We know he’s got a long way to go and he may not be out of the woods but this gorgeous boy is not ready for the scrap heap just yet…. he’s a fighter and we couldn’t be more proud of him!

⚠️The law requires that all puppies MUST be chipped by a breeder by the age of 8 weeks and BEFORE they are sold.
The buyer then needs the microchip number and to know which database was used to add his own details to the chip.
⚠️ If a breeder is selling a dog and can't give the chip and database details, walk away and report to their local council's licensing department, RED FLAG!!
⚠️When a vet implants a chip, the owner then needs the chip number and database used so he can add his details to the chip. Vets don't normally add the owners details.
⚠️All dog owners are required to chip a dog by 8 weeks old... the fine for not chipping your dog is £500. at-microchipped…....

To have suffered this much at such a young age is a tragedy.
'Please say a gentle welcome to Violet, a Jack Russell Terrier found straying near Upchurch Golf Course on Saturday 10th February.
She isn't chipped.
She's only around 5 months old and was found in an appalling condition. She was running alive with fleas, covered in ticks and weighing in at only 3.8kg, is emaciated with all major bones being prominent.
Her finders kept her safe and warm over the weekend, something we're very grateful for.
She's now received appropriate flea treatment and will be wormed within the coming days. As with all starved dogs, she'll begin a structured re-feeding programme to help build her back up.

This handsome boy is Obi. He is a 1 year old large cross breed (Chow/retriever). He originally came in to us because his owner was moving and they are unable to take him with them. He was then rehomed in November 2023 but unfortunately has been returned because he was too energetic and lively 😢Obi is a strong dog and will need an active energetic handler. He is unsure of other dogs therefore will need some additional training regarding this. He travels well in the car and he enjoys going out on walks and playing in our exercise gardens especially if there’s water involved.
He is looking for a home that will give him the time to show his full potential.

TYPE OF HOME: We’re looking for an active home for Pixie that is also calm & quiet. She came into us very fearful and unsure of anything & everything, but has completely came around now and is a little pocket rocket who loves fuss & affection.
Further training will likely be needed when introducing Pixie to new situations and building up her confidence. Pixie has restarted her vaccinations, is microchipped and will be spayed before going to her new home.

DOGS: No (she doesn’t get on with other dogs at all, though can walk past them okay)

Boy is a lovely affectionate dog, who has lived with other animals including chickens, rabbits, horses, cats and other dogs. But he is not good with Sheep and deer, which are unavoidable at his current home. Due to his high prey drive with these particular animals he will need a very secure garden and 6ft fencing as he can easily clear 5ft. He will need to be walked on lead and only exercised off lead in secure areas.
He was placed briefly into a home with a cat, while he did not do anything to the cat he was very interested if it moved quickly so we feel a home without the temptation of cats would be ideal. He is a gorgeous, chunky Lurcher who is friendly with strangers, could live potentially with older children and other non sheep based animals!
