I totally missed the part where the Senate transmogrified into a criminal jury. This idea that you need “proof beyond a reasonable doubt” of wrongdoing to vote against a nominee to the Supreme Court is as dangerous as it is ahistorical.

Treason can only be committed against an enemy of the United States. That is defined clearly: when the US is in a declared/open war.
