The Assessment of Need process for children with developmental problems is not fit for purpose. Waitlists are so long in places that it is impossible for Early Intervention to actually be early.
We have this letter in today's @IrishTimes.

Constructive meeting today with my great colleagues in the Special Interest Group for Speech Language Therapy for people with mental health disorders, planning our response to #sharingthevision to include our profession as part of the policy implementation @MentalHealthSLT
The @CentreforMH new @MH_Equality report includes a section on communication barriers. To ensure #EqualityinMentalHealth it is essential those barriers are identified & removed. #SLTsinMH can play an important role in this area, helping to promote accessibility. #mentalhealth
Access to a range of ‘talking therapies’ is considered in #sharingthevision. But what about those who have language & communication difficulties who struggle to understand or be understood as part of their mental health difficulty? @iaslt@jennifer_brophy@CarolineJagoe
‘Disappointed’ is an understatement at the lack of specific mention in #sharingthevision of SLTs on Community & Forensic MH Teams in this ‘new’ strategy despite the welcome (if obvious) inclusion on CAMHS-ID & Adult-ID teams. Strategy falls far short of what’s needed! @iaslt
Sincerely hope Speech & Language Therapists are included in any consideration for MDT support for adults with mental health disorders & communication & swallowing issues. We’ve worked hard to see this inclusion for those who need our help @iaslt@jennifer_brophy@CarolineJagoe
