The State Department fired 200 experienced U.S. Foreign Service Officers today. No Administration has been more dismissive of our nonpartisan career diplomats. Shameful.
My final report for CBS News is the final chapter of my multi-part series on the glory of RADIO
Johnny Holliday is much more than a radio legend in Maryland. Just ask the surprise guest at the end of this segment!

Veteran CBS News producer Mary Walsh takes leave (first reported by Guardian)
"We've been told to aim our reporting at a particular part of the political spectrum. Honestly, I don't know how to do that."
Absolutely! You wouldn't want "academics and elites" who have actually studied a subject to outweigh the off-the-cuff opinions of village idiots. This is how we're seeing the resurgence of measles, and the widespread belief in almost non-existent vote fraud, among many other great leaps backward in the Trump era. Cronkite would be so very proud of you. @CBSNews
Back in October at the @CBSNews Vice Presidential Debate, @margbrennan asked the candidates if they would support or oppose a preemptive strike by Israel on Iran.
Then-Senator Vance : "it is up to Israel what they think they need to do to keep their country safe. And we should support our allies wherever they are when they're fighting the bad guys."

"...the Iranian authorities are informing us of attacks on the other facilities the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant and Esfahan site...we do not have enough information beyond indicating that military activity has been taking place around these facilities..." https://t.co/tOf1x9Ylyo
Scoop: The Trump admin is preparing to end a federal domestic surveillance program for travelers that's meant to ferret out terrorist threats but has sometimes ended up saddling Americans with inconvenient or invasive searches at airports. Trump plans to discontinue the TSA's "Quiet Skies" program, sources told @CBSNews. An announcement could come as soon as Thursday, one U.S. official said. Aides have debated how to shut down Quiet Skies without any lapses in security, another US official said.
The TSA program works to identify travelers who could present an elevated risk to aviation security. It has caught up some high-profile people in its dragnet, including Tulsi Gabbard, now the director of national intelligence, and led to debates about what has appeared at times to be an uneven application of the rules.
.@RepDeanPhillips calls on Democrats this week to hold a "secret ballot" vote of confidence in President Biden as their nominee, "because so many are afraid that if they speak the truth, they are going to be punished, which is what happens in this business. It is repulsive."
As debate swirls over who could join a Democratic ticket, potentially with Kamala Harris, @margbrennan notes that Sen. Joe Manchin was on @FaceTheNation just hours before President Biden's withdrawal from the race, advocating for a "new generation," and citing Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro as options.
"The belief among many Democrats is that you cannot win with someone who is purely progressive," she says.
"There's no one at this moment preparing behind the scenes to challenge Vice President Harris."
Sources close to Gavin Newsom and Gretchen Whitmer — two Democrats considered possible contenders for the Democratic presidential nomination — tell @costareports they are "preparing to stand down" after President Biden endorsed Harris, and do not believe they'll challenge Harris at the DNC next month.
Russia's foreign minister has weighed in on President Biden's announcement, saying all of this is a "conspiracy."
"Russia telling Americans this message we've already heard from some Republicans — don't trust your elected leaders," @margbrennan reports.
The past few weeks for President Biden was "death by 1,000 cuts," says @margbrennan. She asks Delaware Sen. Chris Coons, a close ally of Biden's, what shifted in the president's thinking.
"He is a fighter. He has survived blows that would have leveled any lesser man. So, in the last few weeks he has struggled with that instinct, that toughness, that determination to keep fighting," Coons says.
Any Democrats who may have been looking to challenge Kamala Harris for the nomination "would be committing political suicide," given that President Biden endorsed Harris within minutes of withdrawing his candidacy, @margbrennan reports.
When asked if he will endorse Kamala Harris for the Democratic nomination, Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT) tells @NorahODonnell he is "a big Harris fan."
"Harris, at the top of the ticket, an African-American woman, a prosecutor up against a convicted felon, I could get pretty excited about that ticket."
Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA) says President Biden dropping out of the 2024 presidential race "jolts the campaign in a way it needs to be jolted." https://t.co/WaVnm81AAG
In a phone interview, former President Donald Trump told @CBSNews that President Biden's decision to drop out of the race is a "shock to the country." What happens next? CBS News’ @Costareports and @Margbrennan explain what led up to the decision and its impact on the September debate.
