Today marks approximately 146 days since Malam El-Rufai was taken into custody after his arrest in February 2026, and his trial is still ongoing.

This has led some people to ask: Where is the voice of Northern elders? So far, there has been no major gathering of Northern elders or a joint statement from the region’s prominent elder groups calling for his release or publicly stating their position on his detention. Meanwhile, his party, the ADC, along with some of his supporters, have continued to express concern over his situation and have called for his rights to be respected.

Does this silence reinforce El-Rufai’s claim from years ago, or are there political reasons why the Northern elders have chosen to remain silent?

There are some ignorant people celebrating the arrest of Malam Nasiru, but what they fail to understand is that the real loss is not to him personally it is to Northern Nigeria. This is because Malam Nasiru is one of the politicians capable of leading a strong and effective opposition.

Also, apart from Kano, Kaduna is regarded as one of the major political centers in Northern Nigeria. This has led some people to believe that the federal government’s objective is to weaken opposition politics in Kaduna State. As things stand, Kano remains the state where Bola faces the strongest political opposition. If you look across the other northern states, you will see that few of them have opposition politics as strong as those in Kano and Kaduna.

This is Mr John Danfulani , a lecturer at the Kaduna State University. This picture was taken in 2016 when he was released from prison. His only 'crime' was criticizing the excesses of Elrufai when he was governor of Kaduna State. His wife, relative and friends pleaded for the innocent man to be released, but Elrufai refused.

Now, Elrufai's wife that I saw yesterday whining and shedding tears, or whatever was on her face, never urged her husband to release Mr Danfulani when his wife was begging for his release. Felt nothing for another man's wife when she was begging for her husband's freedom.

Malam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai’s continued detention has become a serious test of Nigeria’s commitment to justice, due process and democratic freedom.

Whatever political disagreements anyone may have with him, El-Rufai remains a Nigerian citizen entitled to fair treatment under the law. He must not be subjected to punishment before conviction, impossible bail conditions, restricted medical access or institutional pressure designed to break him politically.

This is bigger than one man.

It is about whether state institutions will serve justice or become weapons against opposition voices.

If the government has evidence against El-Rufai, it should present it openly before a competent court. Let the charges be tested. Let his lawyers respond. Let the judiciary decide. But detention must never become a substitute for trial, and legal procedure must never be manipulated into political punishment.

El-Rufai is not above the law.

But he is also not beneath it.

He has the right to his doctors.

He has the right to his family.

He has the right to his lawyers.

He has the right to reasonable bail conditions.

He has the right to dignity and safety while in custody.

The more this administration appears determined to humiliate and silence him, the more Nigerians will believe that the real issue is not justice but political fear.

Malam is a former governor, former minister and one of the most influential political voices in Northern Nigeria. Attempts to break him will not erase his record or weaken his supporters. Instead, they risk turning his detention into a symbol of resistance against selective justice and abuse of power.

President Tinubu’s government must understand that democracy is not strengthened by detaining opponents. It is strengthened by respecting institutions, obeying court orders and allowing every accused citizen to defend himself freely.

The North is watching.

Kaduna is watching.

The opposition is watching.

And history is recording how this government treats those who refuse to bow.

Release El-Rufai under fair and reasonable terms.

Allow him full access to medical care.

Respect his legal rights.

Let the courts determine the truth without political interference.

No government should fear accountability, and no citizen should be punished simply because those in power consider him politically dangerous.

Release Malam Nasir El-Rufai.

Respect due process.

Respect democracy.

Stop the persecution.
